Operator-Level Description of Transient Thermal Grating Dynamics Across Transport Regimes
Transient thermal grating (TTG) experiments provide a powerful means of probing material properties and heat-transport dynamics at small spatiotemporal scales through the temporal response to a spatially periodic excitation. However, quantitative interpretation of the measured transient requires a forward model that consistently connects energy deposition, subsequent heat transport, and the detected TTG observable over the experimental timescale. A unified formulation linking these stages remains insufficiently developed in the TTG context. Here, we formulate a continuum, operator-based TTG forward model that describes the sequence from energy deposition through thermal transport to the temporal evolution of the selected spatial temperature mode within a unified transfer-function framework, while leaving the instrument-specific detection process outside the scope of the present formulation. Heat-transport dynamics are represented by a temporal memory kernel, allowing unresolved relaxation processes to be incorporated into the macroscopic response. The framework provides a basis for assessing the identifiability of thermal diffusivity, heat-propagation speed, and heat-flux …
Extracting the multimodal fingerprint of urban transportation networks
Urban mobility increasingly relies on multimodality, combining the use of bicycle paths, streets, and rail networks. These different modes of transportation are well described by multiplex networks. Here we propose the overlap census method which extracts a multimodal profile from a city's multiplex transportation network. We apply this method to 15 cities, identify clusters of cities with similar profiles, and link this feature to the level of sustainable mobility of each cluster. Our work highlights the importance of evaluating all the transportation systems of a city together to adequately identify and compare its potential for sustainable, multimodal mobility.
International comparison of optical frequencies with transportable optical lattice clocks
Optical clocks have improved their frequency stability and estimated accuracy by more than two orders of magnitude over the best caesium microwave clocks that realise the SI second. Accordingly, an optical redefinition of the second has been widely discussed, prompting a need for the consistency of optical clocks to be verified worldwide. While satellite frequency links are sufficient to compare microwave clocks, a suitable method for comparing high-performance optical clocks over intercontinental distances is missing. Furthermore, remote comparisons over frequency links face fractional uncertainties of a few $10^{-18}$ due to imprecise knowledge of each clock's relativistic redshift, which stems from uncertainty in the geopotential determined at each distant location. Here, we report a landmark campaign towards the era of optical clocks, where, for the first time, state-of-the-art transportable optical clocks from Japan and Europe are brought together to demonstrate international comparisons that require neither a high-performance frequency link nor information on the geopotential difference between remote sites. Conversely, the reproducibility of the clocks after being …
Developments in Connected Vehicles and the Requirement for Increased Cybersecurity
The increase in popularity of connected features in intelligent transportation systems, has led to a greater risk of cyber-attacks and subsequently, requires a more robust validation of cybersecurity in vehicle design. This article explores three such cyber-attacks and the weaknesses in the connected networks. A review is carried out on current vulnerabilities and key considerations for future vehicle design and validation are highlighted. This article addresses the vehicle manufactures desire to add unnecessary remote connections without appropriate security analysis and assessment of the risks involved. The modern vehicle is All Connected and only as strong as its weakest link.
Proposal for the ILC Preparatory Laboratory (Pre-lab)
During the preparatory phase of the International Linear Collider (ILC) project, all technical development and engineering design needed for the start of ILC construction must be completed, in parallel with intergovernmental discussion of governance and sharing of responsibilities and cost. The ILC Preparatory Laboratory (Pre-lab) is conceived to execute the technical and engineering work and to assist the intergovernmental discussion by providing relevant information upon request. It will be based on a worldwide partnership among laboratories with a headquarters hosted in Japan. This proposal, prepared by the ILC International Development Team and endorsed by the International Committee for Future Accelerators, describes an organisational framework and work plan for the Pre-lab. Elaboration, modification and adjustment should be introduced for its implementation, in order to incorporate requirements arising from the physics community, laboratories, and governmental authorities interested in the ILC.
Reflections on the Fifth International Conference on Women in Physics
This article describes reflections on the Fifth International Conference on Women in Physics which was a conference attended by 215 female physicists and a few male physicists from 49 different countries. The article focuses on the barriers that women face in their professional advancement in physics and the extent to which the situation is different in various countries.
Transport in disordered monolayer molybdenum disulfide nanoflakes: evidence for inhomogeneous charge transport
We study charge transport in a monolayer molybdenum disulfide nanoflake over a wide range of carrier density, temperature, and electric bias. We find that the transport is best described by a percolating picture in which the disorder breaks translational invariance, breaking the system up into a series of puddles, rather than previous pictures in which the disorder is treated as homogeneous and uniform. Our work provides insight to a unified picture of charge transport in monolayer molybdenum disulfide nanoflakes and contributes to the development of next-generation molybdenum disulfide based devices.
Internal Universes in Models of Homotopy Type Theory
We begin by recalling the essentially global character of universes in various models of homotopy type theory, which prevents a straightforward axiomatization of their properties using the internal language of the presheaf toposes from which these model are constructed. We get around this problem by extending the internal language with a modal operator for expressing properties of global elements. In this setting we show how to construct a universe that classifies the Cohen-Coquand-Huber-Mörtberg (CCHM) notion of fibration from their cubical sets model, starting from the assumption that the interval is tiny - a property that the interval in cubical sets does indeed have. This leads to an elementary axiomatization of that and related models of homotopy type theory within what we call crisp type theory.
A Geometrical Representation of Entanglement as Internal Constraint
We study a system of two entangled spin 1/2, were the spin's are represented by a sphere model developed within the hidden measurement approach which is a generalization of the Bloch sphere representation, such that also the measurements are represented. We show how an arbitrary tensor product state can be described in a complete way by a specific internal constraint between the ray or density states of the two spin 1/2. We derive a geometrical view of entanglement as a 'rotation' and 'stretching' of the sphere representing the states of the second particle as measurements are performed on the first particle. In the case of the singlet state entanglement can be represented by a real physical constraint, namely by means of a rigid rod.
