COVID-19 mortality prediction: A case study for İstanbul
In this paper, we use SEIR equations to make predictions for the number of mortality due to COVID-19 in İstanbul. Using excess mortality method, we find the number of mortality for the previous three waves in 2020 and 2021. We show that the predictions of our model is consistent with number of moralities for each wave. Furthermore, we predict the number of mortality for the second wave of 2021. We also extend our analysis for Germany, Italy and Turkey to compare the basic reproduction number $R_0$ for Istanbul. Finally, we calculate the number of infected people in Istanbul for herd immunity.

Acceso abierto en Argentina: una propuesta para el monitoreo de las publicaciones científicas con OpenAlex
This study proposes a methodology using OpenAlex (OA) for tracking Open Access publications in the case of Argentina, a country where a self-archiving mandate has been in effect since 2013 ( Law 26.899, 2013). A sample of 167,240 papers by researchers from the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET) was created and analyzed using statistical techniques. We estimate that OA is able to capture between 85-93% of authors for all disciplines, with the exception of Social Sciences and Humanities, where it only reaches an estimated 47%. The availability of papers in Open Access was calculated to be 41% for the period 1953-2021 and 46% when considering exclusively the post-law period (2014-2021). In both periods, gold Open Access made up the most common route. When comparing equal periods post and pre-law, we observed that the upward trend of gold Open Access was pre-existing to the legislation and the availability of closed articles in repositories increased by 5% to what is estimated based on existing trends. Analysis of Methylation Patterns of Some Tumor Suppressor Genes in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Using the Multiplex Ligation-Dependent Probe Amplification [MLPA] Method
Abstract Lung cancer has the leading mortality rate among all cancer types and is the second most common cause of death after cardiovascular diseases. Apart from being an epigenetic mechanism, methylation is also a molecular mechanism which inhibits cancer-related gene expression although there is no mutation at DNA level. The aim of this study was to analyze a probe panel interrogated DNA for methylation patterns in 24 tumor suppressor genes in non-small cell lung cancer using the Methylation Specific- Multiplex Ligation-dependent Probe Amplification [MS-MLPA] method the Multiplex Ligation-dependent Probe Amplification [MLPA] method. Previously examined clinically and histopathologically diagnosed a hundred cases with “non-small cell lung cancer”were included into the study. The DNAs were extracted samples from both cancerous tissues of the cases and their corresponding control tissues. The relations of the methylation profile to clinicopathological factors in NSCLC were evaluated. In this series of three articles, we give an exposition of various results and open problems in three areas of algebraic and geometric combinatorics: totally non-negative matrices, representations of the symmetric group, and hyperplane arrangements. Istanbul Flower Auction: The Need for Speed
We examine a unique auction format used in the Istanbul flower market, which could transform into either Dutch or English auction depending on bidders' bidding behaviors. By introducing a time cost that reduces the value of a perishable good as time passes, we explore how this hybrid auction format accommodates the desire for speed via an adaptive starting price. We show that the Istanbul Flower Auction outperforms both the Dutch and English auctions in terms of the auctioneer's utility. With numerical analysis, we also illustrate the Istanbul Flower Auction's superiority in terms of social welfare and auction duration. Our results highlight the critical role of auction design in improving welfare when the duration of the auction process plays a role.
A closed-form approximation for pricing geometric Istanbul options
The Istanbul options were first introduced by Michel Jacques in 1997. These derivatives are considered as an extension of the Asian options. In this paper, we propose an analytical approximation formula for a geometric Istanbul call option (GIC) under the Black-Scholes model. Our approximate pricing formula is obtained in closed-form using a second-order Taylor expansion. We compare our theoretical results with those of Monte-Carlo simulations using the control variates method. Finally, we study the effects of changes in the price of the underlying asset on the value of GIC.
Unexpected parameter ranges of the 2009 A(H1N1) epidemic for Istanbul and the Netherlands
The data of the 2009 A(H1N1) epidemic in Istanbul, Turkey is unique in terms of the collected data, which include not only the hospitalization but also the fatality information recorded during the pandemic. The analysis of this data displayed an unexpected time shift between the hospital referrals and fatalities. This time shift, which does not conform to the SIR and SEIR models, was explained by multi-stage SIR and SEIR models [21]. In this study we prove that the delay for these models is half of the infectious period within a quadratic approximation, and we determine the epidemic parameters $R_0$, $T$ and $I_0$ of the 2009 A(H1N1) Istanbul and Netherlands epidemics.These epidemic parameters were estimated by comparing the normalized cumulative fatality data with the solutions of the SIR model. Two different error criteria, the $L_2$ norms of the error over the whole observation period and over the initial portion of the data, were used in order to obtain the best-fitting models. It was observed that, with respect to both criteria, the parameters of "good" models were agglomerated along a line in the $T$-$R_0$ plane, instead of being scattered uniformly around a "best" model.
