EG Weighting Districts
2018-03-29T15:09:25
arxiv.org

This past decade has seen a noticeable uptick in asymmetric election results along with the inevitable claims of gerrymandering and litigation. Research, too, has followed, giving rise to intense scrutiny of elections, where the goal is to understand not only what goes into gerrymandering, but how to measure what comes out. Perhaps the most cited symmetry measure of this decade is the EG. The EG has been commonplace in gerrymandering litigation nationwide and the focus of numerous articles, both popular and scholarly. This article shows how the EG can be represented as a weighting function. This is not the full WDM article though it shows up in Google searches. Dependability Evaluation of Stable Diffusion with Soft Errors on the Model Parameters
2024-03-30T13:05:01
arxiv.org

Stable Diffusion is a popular Transformer-based model for image generation from text; it applies an image information creator to the input text and the visual knowledge is added in a step-by-step fashion to create an image that corresponds to the input text. However, this diffusion process can be corrupted by errors from the underlying hardware, which are especially relevant for implementations at the nanoscales. In this paper, the dependability of Stable Diffusion is studied focusing on soft errors in the memory that stores the model parameters; specifically, errors are injected into some critical layers of the Transformer in different blocks of the image information creator, to evaluate their impact on model performance. The simulations results reveal several conclusions: 1) errors on the down blocks of the creator have a larger impact on the quality of the generated images than those on the up blocks, while the errors on middle block have negligible effect; 2) errors on the self-attention (SA) layers have larger impact on the results than those on the cross-attention (CA) layers; 3) for CA layers, errors on deeper levels result in a larger impact; 4) errors on blocks at the …

The profinite completion of multi-EGS groups
2019-10-08T13:54:49
arxiv.org

The class of multi-EGS groups is a generalisation of the well-known Grigorchuk-Gupta-Sidki (GGS-)groups. Here we classify branch multi-EGS groups with the congruence subgroup property and determine the profinite completion of all branch multi-EGS groups. Additionally our results show that branch multi-EGS groups are just infinite.

EG Andromedae: A Symbiotic System as an Insight into Red Giant Chromospheres
2012-10-29T15:56:40
arxiv.org

Symbiotic systems are interacting binary stars consisting of both hot and cool components. This results in a complex environment that is ideal for studying the latter stages of stellar evolution along with interactions within binary systems. As a star approaches the end of its life, in particular the red giant phase, it exhausts its supply of core hydrogen and begins burning its way through successively heavier elements. Red giants lose mass in the form of a dense wind that will replenish the interstellar medium with chemical elements that are formed through nuclear processes deep in the stellar interior. When these elements reach the interstellar medium they play a central role in both stellar and planetary evolution, as well as providing the essential constituents needed for life. The undoubted significance of these cool giants means the study of their atmospheres is necessary to help understand our place in the Universe. This thesis presents Hubble Space Telescope observations of the symbiotic system EG Andromedae as an insight into red giant stars. EG And is one of the brightest and closest symbiotic systems and consists of a red giant primary along with a white dwarf. The …

An Insight in Explaining the Stress Distribution in and around EGS
2016-10-17T16:00:55
arxiv.org

Developing an Enhanced Geothermal System, otherwise known as EGS, is a complex process and is dependent on range of geological and operating variables. Stresses in and around EGS are believed to be either sound and non-harming or violent and catastrophic among different groups involved, directly or indirectly, in EGS. Pros and cons of EGS have been under discussion and research for a while now. This paper addresses issues associated with stress redistribution during and after working cycle of EGS and gives a new insight in understanding the behavior of stresses redistribution in and around basement rock. As the basement rock is thermo-elastically connected to the country rock, newly generated stresses interact with the existing in-situ stresses under prevailing conditions of geological, design and operating variables. Variables dictating the continuous, safe and efficient working of EGS are also outlined in detailed sections. Guidelines for future of the research related to stress redistribution in EGS are also part of this paper.

Superhumps and Repetitive Rebrightenings of the WZ Sge-Type Dwarf Nova, EG Cancri
2003-10-15T17:51:53
arxiv.org

We report on time-resolved photometric observations of the WZ Sge-type dwarf nova, EG Cnc (Huruhata's variable, see also http://www.kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp/vsnet/DNe/egcnc.html), during its superoutburst in 1996-1997. EG Cnc, after the main superoutburst accompanied with development of superhumps typical of a WZ Sge-type dwarf nova, exhibited a series of six major rebrightenings. During these rebrightenings and the following long fading tail, EG Cnc persistently showed superhumps having a period equal to the superhump period observed during the main superoutburst. The persistent superhumps had a constant superhump flux with respect to the rebrightening phase. These findings suggest the superhumps observed during the rebrightening stage and the fading tail are a "remnant" of usual superhumps, and are not newly triggered by rebrightenings. By comparison with the 1977 outburst of this object and outbursts of other WZ Sge-type dwarf novae, we propose an activity sequence of WZ Sge-type superoutbursts, in which the current outburst of EG Cnc is placed between a single-rebrightening event and distinct outbursts separated by a dip. The post-superoutburst behavior of WZ Sge-type dwarf …

Waiting for mu->eg from the MEG experiment
JHEP 0912:030,20092009-04-14T09:32:53
arxiv.org

The Standard Model (SM) predictions for the lepton flavor-violating (LFV) processes like mu->eg are well far from any realistic experimental resolution, thus, the appearance of m->eg at the running MEG experiment would unambiguously point towards a New Physics (NP) signal. In this article, we discuss the phenomenological implications in case of observation/improved upper bound on m->eg at the running MEG experiment for supersymmetric (SUSY) scenarios with a see-saw mechanism accounting for the neutrino masses. We outline the role of related observables to m->eg in shedding light on the nature of the SUSY LFV sources providing useful tools i) to reconstruct some fundamental parameters of the neutrino physics and ii) to test whether an underlying SUSY Grand Unified Theory (GUT) is at work. The perspectives for the detection of LFV signals in tau decays are also discussed.

Thermodynamic uncertainty relations
1998-06-08T15:28:26
arxiv.org

Bohr and Heisenberg suggested that the thermodynamical quantities of temperature and energy are complementary in the same way as position and momentum in quantum mechanics. Roughly speaking, their idea was that a definite temperature can be attributed to a system only if it is submerged in a heat bath, in which case energy fluctuations are unavoidable. On the other hand, a definite energy can only be assigned to systems in thermal isolation, thus excluding the simultaneous determination of its temperature. Rosenfeld extended this analogy with quantum mechanics and obtained a quantitative uncertainty relation in the form (Delta U) (Delta (1/T)) >= k where k is Boltzmann's constant. The two `extreme' cases of this relation would then characterize this complementarity between isolation (U definite) and contact with a heat bath (T definite). Other formulations of the thermodynamical uncertainty relations were proposed by Mandelbrot (1956, 1989), Lindhard (1986) and Lavenda (1987, 1991). This work, however, has not led to a consensus in the literature. It is shown here that the uncertainty relation for temperature and energy in the version of Mandelbrot is indeed exactly analogous to …

Liftability and Contracting Property of Multi-EGS Groups
2024-12-17T13:48:31
arxiv.org

We provide sufficient conditions for the multi-EGS groups to be liftable and thus produce new examples of groups acting transitively on regular trees of finite degree stabilizing one of the ends, whose closures are scale groups as defined by Willis. Additionally, we explicitly compute the contracting nuclei of the groups in this class. We also specialize our results to the classes of multi-edge spinal group and EGS-groups.

EG-Booster: Explanation-Guided Booster of ML Evasion Attacks
2021-08-31T15:36:16
arxiv.org

The widespread usage of machine learning (ML) in a myriad of domains has raised questions about its trustworthiness in security-critical environments. Part of the quest for trustworthy ML is robustness evaluation of ML models to test-time adversarial examples. Inline with the trustworthy ML goal, a useful input to potentially aid robustness evaluation is feature-based explanations of model predictions. In this paper, we present a novel approach called EG-Booster that leverages techniques from explainable ML to guide adversarial example crafting for improved robustness evaluation of ML models before deploying them in security-critical settings. The key insight in EG-Booster is the use of feature-based explanations of model predictions to guide adversarial example crafting by adding consequential perturbations likely to result in model evasion and avoiding non-consequential ones unlikely to contribute to evasion. EG-Booster is agnostic to model architecture, threat model, and supports diverse distance metrics used previously in the literature. We evaluate EG-Booster using image classification benchmark datasets, MNIST and CIFAR10. Our findings suggest that EG-Booster significantly …
