Letter to the Editor re: "Intraoperative indocyanine green near-infrared fluorescence imaging for assessing testicular viability in pediatric testicular torsion: A retrospective study".
Long-term diet-induced obesity disrupts testicular activity in Wistar rats: biochemical, hormonal, and structural evidence.
The increasing prevalence of obesity has been closely associated with male reproductive disorders. Studies on diet-induced obesity provided valuable insights into the factors involved in the decline of male reproductive potential in obese subjects. The aim of the present study was to investigate the consequences of long-term exposure to cafeteria diet, particularly on testicular activity, and pinpoint the most affected components by this condition. The study was conducted on male Wistar rats fed either a standard chow or a cafeteria diet during 16 weeks. A model of diet-induced obesity was assessed, and anthropometrical measures, hormonal, biochemical, and redox profiles were evaluated. Histological, transmission electron microscopic (TEM) and morphometric analysis of the testes as well as the immunolabelling of AR were carried out. DNA fragmentation index was also measured in both groups. The results showed an increase in body weight correlated with elevated BMI and Lee Index values. The elevated fat coefficient was also associated with unbalanced hormonal profile and biochemical parameters. Our histological findings showed altered cytoarchitecture, including sloughing of germ …

Body region and clinical indication-based diagnostic reference levels for pediatric CT: Multicenter study from the MENA region.
There are no published data on pediatric reference dose levels (DRLs) for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). To fill this gap, we conducted a multicenter study to collect and describe data characteristics for establishing body region- and clinical indication-based CT DRLs in the MENA region based on dose information from 15,707 pediatric patients.
Cerebral palsy in a Sudanese tertiary setting: toward a more robust methodological framework.
Modified Delphi consensus on the use of cladribine tablets in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis in North-West Africa.
Cladribine tablets are an oral immune reconstitution therapy with demonstrated efficacy and durable disease control in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). While global evidence supports their use, region-specific guidance adapted to healthcare variability, access constraints, and real-world practice in North-West Africa (NWA) remains limited.
Imported Malaria in a Malaria-Free Region: A Retrospective Analysis of Epidemiological, Clinical, and Therapeutic Patterns in Tizi-Ouzou, Algeria (2018-2024).
Algeria has been certified as malaria-free since 2019 by WHO and last indigenous case was reported in May 2013; however, imported cases remain a concern for possible for reintroduction. This study aimed to describes the epidemiological, clinical, and therapeutic characteristics of imported malaria cases in the Tizi-Ouzou between 2018 and 2024.

Case Report: First Report of Mucocutaneous Leishmaniasis in Algeria: Observations from a Case Report.
We present the first case of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis in Algeria, diagnosed in an immunocompetent 42-year-old man exhibiting an infiltrated and ulcerated plaque leading to macrocheilitis of the entire lower lip. He was a police officer who lived in a village in Ain El Hammam (Kabylie region, known as an active focus of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis) without any history of travel for the previous 3 years. He suffered from cutaneous lesions for 22 months due to the misdiagnosis of a skin lesion resembling other diseases such as Crohn disease or sarcoidosis. A compilation of clinical, histopathological, parasitological, and molecular examinations revealed Leishmania infantum as the etiologic agent. The patient was treated with meglumine antimoniate, which resulted in the complete disappearance of the lesion 4 months after treatment.
Consensus recommendations for diagnosis and treatment of Multiple Sclerosis: 2023 revision of the MENACTRIMS guidelines.
With evolving diagnostic criteria and the advent of new oral and parenteral therapies for Multiple Sclerosis (MS), most current diagnostic and treatment algorithms need revision and updating. The diagnosis of MS relies on incorporating clinical and paraclinical findings to prove dissemination in space and time and exclude alternative diseases that can explain the findings at hand. The differential diagnostic workup should be guided by clinical and laboratory red flags to avoid unnecessary tests. Appropriate selection of MS therapies is critical to maximize patient benefit. The current guidelines review the current diagnostic criteria for MS and the scientific evidence supporting treatment of acute relapses, radiologically isolated syndrome, clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing remitting MS, progressive MS, pediatric cases and pregnant women. The purpose of these guidelines is to provide practical recommendations and algorithms for the diagnosis and treatment of MS based on current scientific evidence and clinical experience.
What is the effect of percutaneous cholesistostomy in patients with acute cholecystitis? when is the right time for the procedure?
Acute cholecystitis (AC) is one of the most common emergency diseases in surgical practice. Although the gold standard treatment is laparoscopic cholecystectomy, percutaneous cholecystostomy (PC) is performed in some patients due to age, comorbidity, and delays in admission. We aimed to investigate the effect of timing on the clinical process of patients undergoing PC.
What Is the Impact of Liver Function to Predict Mortality in Patients with Severe Aortic Stenosis and Reduced Ejection Fraction?
Liver is one of the target organs in patients with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis and reduced ejection fraction. We aimed to evaluate the prognostic impact of liver function reserve as assessed by albumin-bilirubin score on 30-day and 1-year mortality and rehospitalization at 1 year in patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis and reduced ejection fraction undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation.
Algerian Registry for Inborn Errors of Immunity in Children: Report of 887 Children (1985-2021).
Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) represent a heterogeneous large group of genetic disorders characterized by susceptibility of affected individuals to recurrent infections, autoimmune/inflammatory diseases, allergy, and malignancy. We aimed to report for the first time the Algerian registry for IEI in children.
Pure elbow dislocation in a child wrestler with underlying hyperlaxity: What is the optimal time to return to competition?
Elbow dislocations are often considered serious injuries that can cause a child athlete to miss the entire season in wrestling. It was reported that the return to sports after the elbow dislocation was between 6 and 12 months in child wrestlers. In some cases, underlying hyperlaxity may have an essential role in the occurrence of pure elbow dislocation without any ligament injury. We report the case of a 10-year-old boy patient who had pure elbow dislocation following falling onto an outstretched hand in a wrestling match. Because the physical examination findings of the patient indicated the presence of hyperlaxity, the patient was treated by closed reduction, short-term immobilization, and early strengthening of the dynamic stabilizers. This case report's findings suggest that detecting the presence of hyperlaxity in this specific patient group is crucial since this patient group has the potential to return to competitions 6 weeks after injury, unlike patients without hyperlaxity.
What is the optimal dose of intrathecal meperidine in open prostate surgery? A prospective double-blind randomized study.
This study was an analysis of the effect of different dosages of intrathecal meperidine (40 mg, 50 mg, 60 mg, and 70 mg) on hemodynamic parameters, the duration of neural blockade, and the incidence of meperidine-related side effects in patients who underwent an open prostatectomy.
[What is the role of montelukast in asthma treatment?].
Asthma is a common chronic pulmonary disease worldwide. Inhaled glucocorticoids are the most effective therapeutic agents in treatment of asthma and are therefore the first drug of choice in asthma treatment. Antileukotrienes are alternative controller drugs in management of asthma especially in patients who cannot use inhaled glucocorticoids effectively due to compliance problems or poor inhaler techniques.
Tinea capitis at the University Hospital of Tizi-Ouzou, Algeria, and first isolation of Trichophyton tonsurans.
Tinea capitis, which are fungal infections caused by some dermatophyte species, are common in developing countries, such as Algeria, where they represent a public health concern. In order to define the epidemiological, clinical and diagnostic features of these infections, a prospective study was conducting from September 2018 to May 2019, at the University Hospital of Tizi-Ouzou (Algeria).
Emphysema after Sinus Grafting: Importance of Patient's Information, Early Diagnosis, and Management.
The sinus elevation procedure is a safe and predictable technique that allows the placement of implants in atrophic posterior maxillae. However, some recommendations have to be followed by the patient to ensure reliable healing. It is particularly important to avoid inducing trauma in the region concerned and through the sinuses. This report describes a rare complication that occurred after the grafting of a sinus, which was attributed to a violent sneeze a few hours after the intervention. The diagnosis of emphysema following air entry was confirmed by the suddenness of the swelling and associated crepitation, and by the radiographic observation of a delimited radiolucent zone in the grafted sinus. The immediate diagnosis and subsequent management prevented further adverse events. This case report supports the need for complete comprehensive instruction of patients after oral surgery, swift diagnosis, and management of emphysema.
