New black holes with hyperscaling violation and transports of quantum critical points with magnetic impurity
2019-12-29T08:03:47
arxiv.org

We consider the magneto-transports of quantum matters doped with magnetic impurities near the quantum critical points(QCP). For this, we first find new black hole solution with hyper-scaling violation which is dual to such system. By considering the fluctuation near this exact solution, we calculated all transport coefficients using the holographic method. We applied our result to the surface state of the topological insulator with magnetic doping and found two QCP's, one bosonic and the other fermionic. It turns out that doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and Bi$_2$Te$_3$ correspond to different QCP's. We also investigated transports of QCP's as functions of physical parameters and found that there are phase transitions as well as crossovers from weak localization to weak anti-localization.

Experimental access to Transition Distribution Amplitudes with the PANDA experiment at FAIR
2014-09-02T20:00:23
arxiv.org

Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion ($πN$) TDAs from $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ reaction with the future PANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $πN$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ with the PANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to π^+π^- π^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral …

Subtropical Real Root Finding
Proc. ISSAC 2015, pp.347-354, ACM 20152015-01-20T15:01:11

We describe a new incomplete but terminating method for real root finding for large multivariate polynomials. We take an abstract view of the polynomial as the set of exponent vectors associated with sign information on the coefficients. Then we employ linear programming to heuristically find roots. There is a specialized variant for roots with exclusively positive coordinates, which is of considerable interest for applications in chemistry and systems biology. An implementation of our method combining the computer algebra system Reduce with the linear programming solver Gurobi has been successfully applied to input data originating from established mathematical models used in these areas. We have solved several hundred problems with up to more than 800000 monomials in up to 10 variables with degrees up to 12. Our method has failed due to its incompleteness in less than 8 percent of the cases.

Glaciological window into the pace of the organic carbon cycle
2020-05-06T13:31:37
arxiv.org

The glaciological record of atmospheric composition suggests O2 has declined over the last 800000 years at an average rate of 0.3 x 1012 mol (Tmol) O2 yr-1. Because the geological carbon cycle regulates long term atmospheric oxygen concentrations, fluctuations in atmospheric O2 are typically attributed to an imbalance between the weathering of organic carbon (OC) and reduced sulfur on land, a sink of atmospheric O2, and the burial of OC and reduced sulfur in marine sediments, a source of O2. Here we compile and confront a database of C, Fe, S and H exchanges between the fluid Earth (atmosphere, ocean, biosphere) and lithosphere (crust and upper mantle) with the record of deoxygenation to quantify organic carbon sources and sinks in the Cenozoic. We show that the subduction of oxidized oceanic lithosphere and degassing of reduced gas from the Earth's interior is a sink of oxygen, and that this sink significantly exceeds the rate of atmospheric deoxygenation in the Pleistocene. A relative constancy of atmospheric O2 in the Cenozoic requires that the organic carbon cycle was a net source of O2 and sink of CO2, photosynthesis outpaced respiration by an average of ca 40 MtC yr-1 over …

VINE -- A numerical code for simulating astrophysical systems using particles I: Description of the physics and the numerical methods
Astrophys.J.Supp.184:298-325,20092008-02-28T18:02:16
arxiv.org

We present a Fortran 95 code for simulating the evolution of astrophysical systems using particles to represent the underlying fluid flow. The code is designed to be versatile, flexible and extensible, with modular options that can be selected either at compile time or at run time. We include a number of general purpose modules describing a variety of physical processes commonly required in the astrophysical community. The code can be used as an N-body code to evolve a set of particles in two or three dimensions using either a Leapfrog or Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg integrator, with or without individual timesteps for each particle. Particles may interact gravitationally as $N$-body particles, and all or any subset may also interact hydrodynamically, using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic (SPH) method. Massive point particles (`stars') which may accrete nearby SPH or $N$-body particles may also be included. The default free boundary conditions can be replaced by a module to include periodic boundaries. Cosmological expansion may also be included. An interface with special purpose `GRAPE' hardware may also be selected. If available, forces obtained from the GRAPE coprocessors may be …

We present a set of algorithms implementing multidimensional scaling (MDS) for large data sets. MDS is a family of dimensionality reduction techniques using a $n \times n$ distance matrix as input, where $n$ is the number of individuals, and producing a low dimensional configuration: a $n\times r$ matrix with $r

An Intraoperative $β^-$ Detecting Probe For Radio-Guided Surgery in Tumour Resection
2015-11-06T12:58:15
arxiv.org

The development of the $β^-$ based radio-guided surgery aims to extend the technique to those tumours where surgery is the only possible treatment and the assessment of the resection would most profit from the low background around the lesion, as for brain tumours. Feasibility studies on meningioma, glioma, and neuroendocrine tumors already estimated the potentiality of this new treatment. To validate the technique, prototypes of the intraoperative probe required by the technique to detect $β^-$ radiation have been developed. This paper discusses the design details of the device and the tests performed in laboratory. In such tests particular care has to be taken to reproduce the surgical field conditions. The innovative technique to produce specific phantoms and the dedicated testing protocols is described in detail.

Mass Production of 2021 KMTNet Microlensing Planets II
2022-07-15T05:12:27
arxiv.org

We continue our program of publishing all planets (and possible planets) found by eye in 2021 Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) online data. We present 4 planets, (KMT-2021-BLG-0712Lb, KMT-2021-BLG-0909Lb, KMT-2021-BLG-2478Lb, and KMT-2021-BLG-1105Lb), with planet-host mass ratios in the range -3.3 < log q < -2.2. This brings the total of secure, by-eye, 2021 KMTNet planets to 16, including 8 in this series. The by-eye sample is an important check of the completeness of semi-automated detections, which are the basis for statistical analyses. One of the planets, KMT-2021-BLG-1105Lb, is blended with a relatively bright $(I,V)\sim (18.9,21.6)$ star that may be the host. This could be verified immediately by high-resolution imaging. If so, the host is an early G dwarf, and the planet could be characterized by radial-velocity observations on 30m class telescopes.

Mass Production of 2021 KMTNet Microlensing Planets I
2022-02-07T09:26:52
arxiv.org

We inaugurate a program of ``mass production'' of microlensing planets discovered in 2021 KMTNet data, with the aim of laying the basis for future statistical studies. While we ultimately plan to quickly publish all 2021 planets meeting some minimal criteria, the current sample of four was chosen simply on the basis of having low initial estimates of the planet-host mass ratio, $q$. It is therefore notable that 2 members of this sample suffer from a degeneracy in the normalized source radius $ρ$ that arises from different morphologies of closely spaced caustics. All four planets [KMT-2021-BLG-(1391,1253,1372,0748)] have well-characterized mass ratios, $q$, and therefore are suitable for mass-ratio frequency studies. Both of the $ρ$ degeneracies can be resolved by future adaptive optics (AO) observations on 30m class telescopes. We provide general guidance for such AO observations for all events in anticipation of the prospect that they will revolutionize the field of microlensing planets.

Low Frequency Imaging of Fields at High Galactic Latitude with the Murchison Widefield Array 32-Element Prototype

arxiv.org

The Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) is a new low-frequency, wide field-of-view radio interferometer under development at the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory (MRO) in Western Australia. We have used a 32-element MWA prototype interferometer (MWA-32T) to observe two 50-degree diameter fields in the southern sky in the 110 MHz to 200 MHz band in order to evaluate the performance of the MWA-32T, to develop techniques for epoch of reionization experiments, and to make measurements of astronomical foregrounds. We developed a calibration and imaging pipeline for the MWA-32T, and used it to produce ~15' angular resolution maps of the two fields. We perform a blind source extraction using these confusion-limited images, and detect 655 sources at high significance with an additional 871 lower significance source candidates. We compare these sources with existing low-frequency radio surveys in order to assess the MWA-32T system performance, wide field analysis algorithms, and catalog quality. Our source catalog is found to agree well with existing low-frequency surveys in these regions of the sky and with statistical distributions of point sources derived from Northern Hemisphere …
