NOAA/WDS Paleoclimatology - Fennoscandia, 500-2004 AD, maximum latewood density, Swedish Scots pine, PAGES Euro-Med 2k Version
This paper presents updated tree-ring width (TRW) and maximum density (MXD) from Torneträsk in northern Sweden, now covering the period AD 500-2004. By including data from relatively young trees for the most recent period, a previously noted decline in recent MXD is eliminated. Non-climatological growth trends in the data are removed using Regional Curve Standardization (RCS), thus producing TRW and MXD chronologies with preserved low-frequency variability. The chronologies are calibrated using local and regional instrumental climate records. A boot-strapped response function analysis using regional climate data shows that tree growth is forced by April-August temperatures and that the regression weights for MXD are much stronger than for TRW. The robustness of the reconstruction equation is verified by independent temperature data and shows that 63-64% of the instrumental inter-annual variation is captured by the tree-ring data. This is a significant improvement compared to previously published reconstructions based on tree-ring data from Torneträsk. A divergence phenomenon around AD 1800, expressed as an increase in TRW that is not paralleled by temperature and MXD, is most …
NOAA/WDS Paleoclimatology - Central Europe, 500 BC - 2003 AD, tree ring width, Stone pine and European Larch, PAGES Euro-Med 2k Version
A central European summer temperature proxy was developed based on 1089 stone pine (Pinus cembra) and 457 European larch (Larix decidua) ring width series from high-elevation sites in the Austrian Alps and adjacent areas. This composite record includes living trees, historical timber, and subfossil wood, and correlates at 0.72 to 0.92 with interannual to multidecadal variations in instrumental June-to-August (JJA) temperature (1864–2003). The new proxy is significantly positive correlated with 20th century JJA temperatures of central Europe and the Mediterranean region, and possesses high- to low-frequency agreement with an independent maximum latewood density-based temperature surrogate from the Swiss Alps (r = 0.35 to 0.44; 755 to 2003 C.E.).

The Smokerface poster campaign for adolescent smoking prevention in schools: A cluster-randomized controlled trial.
Tobacco use remains a leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality and is commonly initiated in adolescence. We evaluated whether Smokerface-Poster, a low-intensity, appearance-based school campaign promoting a photoaging app, could attenuate smoking uptake among early adolescents.
A dynamic Material Flow Analysis of furniture in the EU27 to support future circular strategies
Abstract Circular Economy strategies require robust analyses of material stocks and flows of relevant product groups. Furniture is one such relevant product category, yet its stocks and flows remain poorly quantified. This study addresses this gap by conducting a dynamic Material Flow Analysis at the product and country level in the European Union (EU27) from 1995 to 2024. A robust data cleaning and gap filling framework is developed to refine production data from the Eurostat PRODCOM database, while explicitly addressing uncertainty through the estimation procedure using a Monte Carlo approach. Combining production with trade data from BACI, we calculate in each EU27 country yearly consumption, stock, waste generation, and estimate composition for 19 furniture product categories. In 2024, EU27 furniture stocks reached 231 Mt (515 kg/capita) with wooden furniture products accounting for the largest share. Of the 19.4 Mt of waste generated, preliminary estimates suggest that in the EU 60% is recycled, 33% incinerated, and 7.5% landfilled.
Evaluating a Coenzyme Q10-Based Food for Special Medical Purpose, for Mitochondrial Diseases Management: An Open-Label, Pilot Trial.
Primary mitochondrial diseases (PMD) are rare disorders with limited therapeutic options. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) supplementation is widely used, although formulation differences can affect absorption and efficacy. This open-label pilot feasibility trial evaluated a food for special medical purposes (FSMP) containing high-dose CoQ10 (250 mg per capsule) in patients with PMD. Ten patients (mean age: 55.5 ± 8.6 years) were enrolled. Serum/plasma biomarkers, including CoQ10, fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15), ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), total sulfhydryl groups (t-SH), and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), were assessed at baseline (T0, after ≥30 days of conventional ubidecarenone) and after 30 days of FSMP administration (T1). Fatigue severity scale (FSS) and 5-times sit-to-stand test (5xSST) were evaluated at both timepoints. FSMP was administered at 250 or 500 mg/day. Twenty sex- and age-matched healthy controls were included for CoQ10 comparison. Absolute CoQ10 concentrations remained stable overall at T1, with all patients maintaining levels above 390 ng/mL (100% vs. 60% at T0), although concentrations remained …
Toward hybrid mental health care: an early health technology assessment based on stakeholder analysis and economic simulations.
ObjectivesCombining digital and traditional treatment elements as part of a hybrid care delivery model may strengthen the sustainability of mental health care. However, implementation problems permeate efforts of digitalizing routine care. The objective of this formative study is to explore current unmet stakeholder needs and the potential value of hybrid care models for the treatment of severe mental disorders, in order to guide further research and inform practical implementation strategies.MethodsWe applied Step Up, an early health technology assessment (eHTA) framework. We performed (a) a template analysis of qualitative data from a stakeholder workshop mapping unmet needs, potential effects of hybrid care models, and conditions relevant for implementation and (b) exploratory economic simulations of the impact of increasing video consultation use in routine services on quantitative sustainability parameters.ResultsThe template analysis revealed stakeholder-anticipated value from hybrid care models across all domains: patient, clinician, and next-of-kin user experiences; clinical variables; organizational setup; and economy. Two recommendations for enhancing implementation were …
Global influenza epidemiology after 2020: patterns of circulation, epidemic timing and duration, and implications for vaccination strategies.
INTRODUCTIONThere remains uncertainty whether global influenza seasonality, viral dynamics and epidemic duration have re-established after 2021.AIMWe describe global circulation patterns of influenza viruses from 2021 to 2025 and discuss implications for prevention and surveillance.METHODSWe analysed World Health Organization (WHO) FluNet sentinel and non-sentinel/not-defined virological data from week 1/2021 to 26/2025, stratifying by latitude, region and season. We calculated influenza positivity rate, proportion of virus (sub)types, typical peak timing and duration of influenza epidemics (applying the 75% annual average percentage method).RESULTSSentinel surveillance in 120 countries reported 500,870 detections in this period; positivity rate rose globally from 3.0% in 2021 to 23.7% in 2024. Type A viruses caused over two-thirds of cases, with variability across WHO Regions and seasons. Among A subtypes, A(H3N2) dominated in 2021/22 and A(H1N1)pdm09 in 2023/24, while all but three influenza B cases were B/Victoria. Epidemic peaks typically occurred from December to March and May to August in northern and southern hemispheres countries, respectively, while tropical countries …
An advanced reliability reserve incentivizes flexibility investments while safeguarding the electricity market.
To ensure security of supply in the power sector, many countries are considering capacity mechanisms. Simultaneously, the expansion of variable renewables increases the need for power sector flexibility, with promising options on the demand side. We analyze how a centralized capacity market and an advanced reliability reserve with a moderately high activation price affect demand-side flexibility investments in a German 2030 case study. Using a capacity expansion model with detailed demand-side flexibility potentials, we show that a centralized capacity market caps wholesale market prices, thereby reducing incentives for flexibility investments. The reliability reserve induces seven times higher flexibility investments in energy-intensive industries and twice as high investments in district heating storage, while achieving security of supply at similar electricity supply costs. The reliability reserve could create a learning environment for flexibility technologies to support the transition to climate neutrality, and policymakers should consider it in forthcoming capacity mechanism decisions.
Techno-Economic Assessment of Two Process Routes for Lignin-Derived Alkylphenols and Aromatic Hydrocarbons.
Lignin valorization processes are crucial for enhancing the economic feasibility of lignocellulosic biorefineries and improving waste management in the pulp and paper industries. This study performed a detailed techno-economic evaluation comparing two alternative lignin conversion pathways, focusing on the production of aromatics and alkylphenol: HydroDeOxygenation (HDO) and HydroDeOxygenation are preceded by HydroThermal Liquefaction (HDO + HTL). The analysis revealed that the integrated HDO + HTL is technically and economically superior, since it provides higher alkylphenol yield (30-35% by weight) and requires significantly less hydrogen, consuming only 22-28 kg of H
Daratumumab monotherapy for relapsed AL amyloidosis: a single center retrospective analysis.
PurposeTreatment of relapsed AL amyloidosis remains challenging as patients frequently suffer from severe organ dysfunctions. Daratumumab, a cornerstone drug in multiple myeloma and newly diagnosed AL amyloidosis, has also shown promise in relapsed AL amyloidosis.Materials and methodsTo assess the efficacy of daratumumab, we conducted a retrospective study of 40 patients who received daratumumab monotherapy in our prospective amyloidosis cohort.ResultsThe median age of the cohort was 67 years, and 31 patients were classified as stage III/IV by the Mayo 2012 guidelines and 32 patients as stage IIIa/IIIb by the European staging system. The overall hematologic and cardiac response rates were 72.5% and 42.4%, respectively. With median follow-up duration of 26.9 months, the estimated median progression-free survival was 21.9 months. Deep hematologic (p < 0.001) and cardiac response (p = 0.001) were associated with prolonged progression free survival. The duration of hematologic/cardiac responses were 26.2 months and 27.8 months, respectively. The median overall survival was 30.9 months. Treatment was well tolerated, as with 3 patients experiencing grade 3-4 hematologic adverse events …
A satellite based machine learning approach for estimating high resolution daily average air temperature in a megacity in Brazil.
Spatiotemporally resolved ambient temperature data are essential for environmental epidemiology, especially in urban areas where temperature can vary sharply over short distances, influencing population exposure. Additionally, heat distribution often reflects built environment patterns and may correlate with existing social and environmental disparities. Continuous temporal records at high spatial resolution are, however, often lacking, especially in low- and middle-income countries. We developed a generalizable tree-based machine learning approach to estimate daily mean temperatures at 500 × 500 m resolution using São Paulo, a megacity in Brazil, as a case study, to demonstrate its utility in highly urbanized settings with a heterogeneous urban fabric and unevenly distributed temperature monitoring stations. We trained a Random Forest model using open-access remote sensing data, along with derived products, and temperature measurements from 43 ground stations. To prevent overfitting and select relevant features, we employed a forward feature selection algorithm with target-oriented (spatial) cross-validation. Hyperparameter tuning was performed using grid search approach. The …
