Creative Image Generation with Diffusion Models
2026-01-29T18:48:48
arxiv.org

Creative image generation has emerged as a compelling area of research, driven by the need to produce novel and high-quality images that expand the boundaries of imagination. In this work, we propose a novel framework for creative generation using diffusion models, where creativity is associated with the inverse probability of an image's existence in the CLIP embedding space. Unlike prior approaches that rely on a manual blending of concepts or exclusion of subcategories, our method calculates the probability distribution of generated images and drives it towards low-probability regions to produce rare, imaginative, and visually captivating outputs. We also introduce pullback mechanisms, achieving high creativity without sacrificing visual fidelity. Extensive experiments on text-to-image diffusion models demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our creative generation framework, showcasing its ability to produce unique, novel, and thought-provoking images. This work provides a new perspective on creativity in generative models, offering a principled method to foster innovation in visual content synthesis.

This article evaluates how creative uses of machine learning can address three adjacent terms: ambiguity, uncertainty and indeterminacy. Through the progression of these concepts it reflects on increasing ambitions for machine learning as a creative partner, illustrated with research from Unit 21 at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. Through indeterminacy are potential future approaches to machine learning and design.

Are Effective Leaders Creative?
2015-01-24T06:47:19
arxiv.org

This paper explains in layperson's terms how an agent-based model was used to investigate the widely held belief that creativity is an important component of effective leadership. Creative leadership was found to increase the mean fitness of cultural outputs across an artificial society, but the more creative the followers were, the greater the extent to which the beneficial effect of creative leadership was washed out. Early in a run when the fitness of ideas was low, a form of leadership that entails the highest possible degree of creativity was best for the mean fitness of outputs across the society. As the mean fitness of outputs increased a transition inevitably occurs after which point a less creative style of leadership proved most effective. Implications of these findings are discussed.

Breakdowns for Human-Machine Creative Reflexivity
2026-07-17T11:25:45
arxiv.org

Generative AI (GenAI) works via goal-directed computation, which differs fundamentally from human creative processes. This poses challenges for the intelligent support of creative experiences. We propose "breakdowns" as opportunities for the exchange of perspectives between human and machine. Breakdowns disrupt a flow and force us to consciously evaluate our "being-in-the-world". Between human and machine, breakdowns can function as openings for collaborative creative reflection. We are currently studying human-human creative interactions, to identify the markers of these inter-subjective openings, and to understand how they are used in a co-creative process. We present preliminary findings on breakdowns as a design principle for creativity support, prioritising human creative agency and meaningful reflection over automated content generation.

From State Changes to Creative Decisions: Documenting and Interpreting Traces Across Creative Domains
2026-03-07T12:50:42
arxiv.org

Analyzing creative activity traces requires capturing activity at appropriate granularity and interpreting it in ways that reflect the structure of creative practice. However, existing approaches record state changes without preserving the intent or relationships that define higher-level creative moves. This decoupling manifests differently across domains: GenAI tools lose non-linear exploration structure, visualization authoring obscures representational intent, and programmatic environments flatten interaction boundaries. We present three complementary approaches: a node-based interface for stateful GenAI artifact management, a vocabulary of visual cues as higher-level creative moves in visualization authoring, and a programming model that embeds semantic histories directly into interaction state.

Reflecting on Creative-Boundaries with an AI Co-Doodler

In this pictorial, we consider how the negotiation of creative boundaries with a co-creative AI system can create moments for personal creative reflection. We ground this in our experiences with Froggi-Draw, a single-initiative co-doodling system that gives users power to decide when and how much an AI "collaborator" (Froggi) contributes to their drawing. From a 1-week pilot study where (n=8) novice and experienced artists doodled daily with the system, we report on ways participants navigated creative risk and uncertainty, and how their usage and perceptions of Froggi shifted over time. In moments of disruption, participants described the system as encroaching on their creative territory. We consider how the design of a supportive, co-creative AI "collaborator" might look like the design of a supportive power dynamic---and finding ways to offer users control to find, reflect upon, and flexibly negotiate the boundaries of that dynamic.

VLM-Guided Adaptive Negative Prompting for Creative Generation
2025-10-12T17:34:59
arxiv.org

Creative generation is the synthesis of new, surprising, and valuable samples that reflect user intent yet cannot be envisioned in advance. This task aims to extend human imagination, enabling the discovery of visual concepts that exist in the unexplored spaces between familiar domains. While text-to-image diffusion models excel at rendering photorealistic scenes that faithfully match user prompts, they still struggle to generate genuinely novel content. Existing approaches to enhance generative creativity either rely on interpolation of image features, which restricts exploration to predefined categories, or require time-intensive procedures such as embedding optimization or model fine-tuning. We propose VLM-Guided Adaptive Negative-Prompting, a training-free, inference-time method that promotes creative image generation while preserving the validity of the generated object. Our approach utilizes a vision-language model (VLM) that analyzes intermediate outputs of the generation process and adaptively steers it away from conventional visual concepts, encouraging the emergence of novel and surprising outputs. We evaluate creativity through both novelty and validity, using …

Social Facilitation of Creative Reflection: AI-agents and Humans
2026-08-07T08:59:35
arxiv.org

Social collaboration can support people's reflection and is a crucial component of creativity. Creative technologies have been designed to support more collaborative ways of working, including using AI to simulate social partners. As human-AI creative collaborations increase, further investigation is needed into how different social interactions influence creative reflection and at which stage a social intervention is crucial to improve creative outcomes. Considering that non-verbal communication is the bedrock of human cognition and influence, non-verbal social dynamics should be examined in detail in the age of AI-companionship. For example, during social interaction, the social facilitation effect describes how the mere presence or observation of others influences how a person behaves and feels in the context. Whether changes in technology-mediated social environments influence how people reflect on their creative work needs further exploration, as does whether social AI-companionship elicits similar effects as humans. This paper discusses how theoretical mechanisms relating to social facilitation could influence creative practice and reflection, proposing ways of further …

Fatigue-Aware Ad Creative Selection
2019-08-21T03:56:49
arxiv.org

In online display advertising, selecting the most effective ad creative (ad image) for each impression is a crucial task for DSPs (Demand-Side Platforms) to fulfill their goals (click-through rate, number of conversions, revenue, and brand improvement). As widely recognized in the marketing literature, the effect of ad creative changes with the number of repetitive ad exposures. In this study, we propose an efficient and easy-to-implement ad creative selection algorithm that explicitly considers user's psychological status when selecting ad creatives. The proposed system was deployed in a real-world production environment and tested against the baseline algorithms. The results show superiority of the proposed algorithm.

Creative ideas for actualizing student potential
2013-10-11T02:57:39
arxiv.org

Human creativity is a multifaceted phenomenon with cognitive, attitudinal, intrapersonal interpersonal, practical, socio-cultural, economic, and environmental aspects. It can be challenging to incorporate creativity in classrooms. Teachers tend to inhibit creativity by focusing on reproduction of knowledge, obedience and passivity in class, and correct responses, which are easier to evaluate than creative ones. Teaching in such a way as to discourage creative answers and approaches may lead to higher scores on standardized tests (with all the sociological, marketplace, and political consequences that entails). Teachers claim to value creativity, but to hold negative attitudes toward, and show little tolerance of, attributes associated with creativity, such as risk taking, impulsivity, and independence. When teachers do encourage creativity, it is often the case that neither teacher nor students knows what the expectations are. Moreover, students fear that they will be critically judged if they produce something in which they have invested at a personal level. Despite the potentially threatening aspects of encouraging creative classrooms, no other investment in education could be …
