On the Impact of Satellite Communications over Mobile Networks: An Experimental Analysis
IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, 20192019-03-21T15:55:20
arxiv.org

Future telecommunication systems are expected to co-exist with different backhauling nodes such as terrestrial or satellite systems. Satellite connectivity can add flexibility to backhauling networks and provide an alternative route for transmission. This paper presents experimental comparisons of satellite and terrestrial cellular networks and evaluates their performances in terms of different Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) including Channel Quality Index (CQI), Modulation Coding Scheme (MCS) index, Downlink throughput, Frame Utilization (FU) and number of Resource Block (RB) utilization ratios. Our experimental satellite network system uses a real satellite backhaul deployment and works in Ka band (with two specific sub-bands on 19 Ghz in downlink and 29 Ghz in uplink). As a benchmark, we compare our system with live terrestrial network in which backhaul connection is cellular backhaul. Our experiments reveal three main observations: First observation is that there exists FU and number of RB utilization problems in the satellite link even though there exists a single test user equipment (UE) with high CQI and MCS index values. Second observation is that in satellite link …

Finite element formulations for Maxwell's eigenvalue problem using continuous Lagrangian interpolations
2023-03-31T19:43:24
arxiv.org

We consider nodal-based Lagrangian interpolations for the finite element approximation of the Maxwell eigenvalue problem. The first approach introduced is a standard Galerkin method on Powell-Sabin meshes, which has recently been shown to yield convergent approximations in two dimensions, whereas the other two are stabilized formulations that can be motivated by a variational multiscale approach. For the latter, a mixed formulation equivalent to the original problem is used, in which the operator has a saddle point structure. The Lagrange multiplier introduced to enforce the divergence constraint vanishes in an appropriate functional setting. The first stabilized method we consider consists of an augmented formulation with the introduction of a mesh dependent term that can be regarded as the Laplacian of the multiplier of the divergence constraint. The second formulation is based on orthogonal projections, which can be recast as a residual based stabilization technique. We rely on the classical spectral theory to analyze the approximating methods for the eigenproblem. The stability and convergence aspects are inherited from the associated source problems. We investigate the …

Assumptions Underlying Agile Software Development Processes
Journal of Database Management, Volume 16, No. 4, pp. 62-87, October-December 2005 Idea Group Inc., 20052014-09-22T17:13:39

Agile processes focus on facilitating early and fast production of working code, and are based on software development process models that support iterative, incremental development of software. Although agile methods have existed for a number of years now, answers to questions concerning the suitability of agile processes to particular software development environments are still often based on anecdotal accounts of experiences. An appreciation of the (often unstated) assumptions underlying agile processes can lead to a better understanding of the applicability of agile processes to particular situations. Agile processes are less likely to be applicable in situations in which core assumptions do not hold. This paper examines the principles and advocated practices of agile processes to identify underlying assumptions. The paper also identifies limitations that may arise from these assumptions and outlines how the limitations can be addresses by incorporating other software development techniques and practices into agile development environments.

A stabilized finite element method for the two-field and three-field Stokes eigenvalue problems
2016-02-27T14:54:17
arxiv.org

In this paper, the stabilized finite element approximation of the Stokes eigenvalue problems is considered for both the two-field (displacement-pressure) and the three-field (stress-displacement-pressure) formulations. The method presented is based on a subgrid scale concept, and depends on the approximation of the unresolvable scales of the continuous solution. In general, subgrid scale techniques consist in the addition of a residual based term to the basic Galerkin formulation. The application of a standard residual based stabilization method to a linear eigenvalue problem leads to a quadratic eigenvalue problem in discrete form which is physically inconvenient. As a distinguished feature of the present study, we take the space of the unresolved subscales orthogonal to the finite element space, which promises a remedy to the above mentioned complication. In essence, we put forward that only if the orthogonal projection is used, the residual is simplified and the use of term by term stabilization is allowed. Thus, we do not need to put the whole residual in the formulation, and the linear eigenproblem form is recovered properly. We prove that the method applied is convergent, …

Reduced Order Model for Chemical Kinetics: A case study with Primordial Chemical Network
2022-07-14T18:37:26
arxiv.org

Chemical kinetics plays an important role in governing the thermal evolution in reactive flows problems. The possible interactions between chemical species increase drastically with the number of species considered in the system. Various ways have been proposed before to simplify chemical networks with an aim to reduce the computational complexity of the chemical network. These techniques oftentimes require domain-knowledge experts to handcraftedly identify important reaction pathways and possible simplifications. Here, we propose a combination of autoencoder and neural ordinary differential equation to model the temporal evolution of chemical kinetics in a reduced subspace. We demonstrated that our model has achieved a close-to 10-fold speed-up compared to commonly used astro-chemistry solver for a 9-species primordial network, while maintaining 1 percent accuracy across a wide-range of density and temperature.

CLaC at SemEval-2025 Task 6: A Multi-Architecture Approach for Corporate Environmental Promise Verification
2025-05-29T15:19:00
arxiv.org

This paper presents our approach to the SemEval-2025 Task~6 (PromiseEval), which focuses on verifying promises in corporate ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) reports. We explore three model architectures to address the four subtasks of promise identification, supporting evidence assessment, clarity evaluation, and verification timing. Our first model utilizes ESG-BERT with task-specific classifier heads, while our second model enhances this architecture with linguistic features tailored for each subtask. Our third approach implements a combined subtask model with attention-based sequence pooling, transformer representations augmented with document metadata, and multi-objective learning. Experiments on the English portion of the ML-Promise dataset demonstrate progressive improvement across our models, with our combined subtask approach achieving a leaderboard score of 0.5268, outperforming the provided baseline of 0.5227. Our work highlights the effectiveness of linguistic feature extraction, attention pooling, and multi-objective learning in promise verification tasks, despite challenges posed by class imbalance and limited training data.

Nitsche's prescription of Dirichlet conditions in the finite element approximation of Maxwell's problem
2023-10-27T09:43:34
arxiv.org

In this paper we consider the finite element approximation of Maxwell's problem and analyse the prescription of essential boundary conditions in a weak sense using Nitsche's method. To avoid indefiniteness of the problem, the original equations are augmented with the gradient of a scalar field that allows one to impose the zero divergence of the magnetic induction, even if the exact solution for this scalar field is zero. Two finite element approximations are considered, namely, one in which the approximation spaces are assumed to satisfy the appropriate inf-sup condition that render the standard Galerkin method stable, and another augmented and stabilised one that permits the use of finite element interpolations of arbitrary order. Stability and convergence results are provided for the two finite element formulations considered.

Fractal Heterogeneous Media
Physical Review E 81, 026706 (2010)2009-12-07T22:27:55
arxiv.org

A method is proposed for generating compact fractal disordered media, by generalizing the random midpoint displacement algorithm. The obtained structures are invasive stochastic fractals, with the Hurst exponent varying as a continuous parameter, as opposed to lacunar deterministic fractals, such as the Menger sponge. By employing the Detrending Moving Average algorithm [Phys. Rev. E 76, 056703 (2007)], the Hurst exponent of the generated structure can be subsequently checked. The fractality of such a structure is referred to a property defined over a three dimensional topology rather than to the topology itself. Consequently, in this framework, the Hurst exponent should be intended as an estimator of compactness rather than of roughness. Applications can be envisaged for simulating and quantifying complex systems characterized by self-similar heterogeneity across space. For example, exploitation areas range from the design and control of multifunctional self-assembled artificial nano and micro structures, to the analysis and modelling of complex pattern formation in biology, environmental sciences, geomorphological sciences, etc.

Boundary- and Screening-Induced Bubbly Phases in Autophoretic Active Matter
2026-09-03T15:27:20
arxiv.org

Spatial confinement and chemical screening fundamentally reshape the non-equilibrium phase behavior of autophoretic active particles. Here, we present a systematic study mapping the collective dynamics of self-propelled particles governed by chemo-attractive translational forces ($μ_t < 0$) and chemo-repulsive rotational torques ($μ_r > 0$) across varying screening parameters $κ$, torque magnitudes $μ_r$, and boundary condition coefficients $Λ^c$. Beyond standard chemotactic macro-phase separation and dynamic clustering, we report the emergence of novel boundary- and screening-induced bubbly phases, classified into boiling and bursting bubbles. Using a metric triad of steady-state cluster fraction $\langle S \rangle$, temporal fluctuation magnitude $σ_S$, and coordination number $\langle Q \rangle$, we draw phase diagrams to demarcate phases for no-flux boundaries ($Λ^c = 1$) and chemically permeable interfaces ($Λ^c = 0$) . Increasing chemical screening ($κ$) systematically suppresses long-range attraction, driving sequential phase transitions from macro-scale collapse toward bubbly states, dynamic micro-clusters, and homogeneous gas phases, while simultaneously inducing …
