Grackle: a Chemistry and Cooling Library for Astrophysics
2016-10-30T02:12:09
arxiv.org

We present the Grackle chemistry and cooling library for astrophysical simulations and models. Grackle provides a treatment of non-equilibrium primordial chemistry and cooling for H, D, and He species, including H2 formation on dust grains; tabulated primordial and metal cooling; multiple UV background models; and support for radiation transfer and arbitrary heat sources. The library has an easily implementable interface for simulation codes written in C, C++, and Fortran as well as a Python interface with added convenience functions for semi-analytical models. As an open-source project, Grackle provides a community resource for accessing and disseminating astrochemical data and numerical methods. We present the full details of the core functionality, the simulation and Python interfaces, testing infrastructure, performance, and range of applicability. Grackle is a fully open-source project and new contributions are welcome.

Addressing the Unforeseen Harms of Technology CCC Whitepaper
2024-08-12T18:16:37
arxiv.org

Recent years have seen increased awareness of the potential significant impacts of computing technologies, both positive and negative. This whitepaper explores how to address possible harmful consequences of computing technologies that might be difficult to anticipate, and thereby mitigate or address. It starts from the assumption that very few harms due to technology are intentional or deliberate; rather, the vast majority result from failure to recognize and respond to them prior to deployment. Nonetheless, there are concrete steps that can be taken to address the difficult problem of anticipating and responding to potential harms from new technologies.

Collins Effect from Polarized SIDIS and $e^+e^-$ Data
AIPConf.Proc.915:584-587,20072006-12-07T15:53:59
arxiv.org

The recent data on the transverse single spin asymmetry $A_{UT}^{\sin(φ_h+φ_S)}$ from HERMES and COMPASS Collaborations are analysed within LO parton model with unintegrated parton distribution and fragmentation functions. A fit of SIDIS data from HERMES Collaboration is performed leading to the extraction of favoured and unfavoured Collins fragmentation functions. A very good description of COMPASS data is obtained. BELLE $e^+e^-$ data are shown to be compatible with our estimates based on the extracted Collins fragmentation functions. Predictions for $A_{UT}^{\sin(φ_h+φ_S)}$ asymmetries at JLab and COMPASS operating on a proton target are given.

Astro2020 APC White Paper: Elevating the Role of Software as a Product of the Research Enterprise
2019-07-15T03:20:35
arxiv.org

Software is a critical part of modern research, and yet there are insufficient mechanisms in the scholarly ecosystem to acknowledge, cite, and measure the impact of research software. The majority of academic fields rely on a one-dimensional credit model whereby academic articles (and their associated citations) are the dominant factor in the success of a researcher's career. In the petabyte era of astronomical science, citing software and measuring its impact enables academia to retain and reward researchers that make significant software contributions. These highly skilled researchers must be retained to maximize the scientific return from petabyte-scale datasets. Evolving beyond the one-dimensional credit model requires overcoming several key challenges, including the current scholarly ecosystem and scientific culture issues. This white paper will present these challenges and suggest practical solutions for elevating the role of software as a product of the research enterprise.

Polarization effects in light-by-light scattering: Euler-Heisenberg versus Born-Infeld
Int. J. Mod. Phys. A 32, 1750053 (2017)2017-01-25T16:56:42
arxiv.org

The angular dependence of the differential cross section of unpolarized light-by-light scattering summed over final polarizations is the same in any low-energy effective theory of quantum electrodynamics and also in Born-Infeld electrodynamics. In this paper we derive general expressions for polarization-dependent low-energy scattering amplitudes, including a hypothetical parity-violating situation. These are evaluated for quantum electrodynamics with charged scalar or spinor particles, which give strikingly different polarization effects. Ordinary quantum electrodynamics is found to exhibit rather intricate polarization patterns for linear polarizations, whereas supersymmetric quantum electrodynamics and Born-Infeld electrodynamics give particularly simple forms.

Limitations of Agile Software Processes
Third International Conference on Extreme Programming and Flexible Processes in Software Engineering, XP2002, May 26-30, Alghero, Italy, pg. 43-46, 20022014-09-22T17:50:07

Software developers and project managers are struggling to assess the appropriateness of agile processes to their development environments. This paper identifies limitations that apply to many of the published agile processes in terms of the types of projects in which their application may be problematic.

Annotated Hands for Generative Models
2024-01-26T18:57:54
arxiv.org

Generative models such as GANs and diffusion models have demonstrated impressive image generation capabilities. Despite these successes, these systems are surprisingly poor at creating images with hands. We propose a novel training framework for generative models that substantially improves the ability of such systems to create hand images. Our approach is to augment the training images with three additional channels that provide annotations to hands in the image. These annotations provide additional structure that coax the generative model to produce higher quality hand images. We demonstrate this approach on two different generative models: a generative adversarial network and a diffusion model. We demonstrate our method both on a new synthetic dataset of hand images and also on real photographs that contain hands. We measure the improved quality of the generated hands through higher confidence in finger joint identification using an off-the-shelf hand detector.

Least reliable messages based early termination method for LT soft decoder
2016-12-16T13:35:10
arxiv.org

In this paper, we propose a new early termination method (ETM) for Luby transform (LT) belief propagation (BP) decoder. The proposed ETM, which we call least reliable messages (LRM), observes only sign alterations of a small cluster in log-likelihood ratio (LLR) messages passing between nodes in BP decoder. Simulation results and complexity analyzes show that LRM significantly lower computational complexity of early termination section in decoder without any performance degradation and decreases the average decoding iteration amounts compared to conventional ETMs in literature. The method can be easily applied to code families which can be decoded by BP such as low density parity check (LDPC) codes, polar codes and Raptor codes.

Coactions on C*-algebras and universal properties
2022-12-08T19:57:48
arxiv.org

It is well-known that the maximalization of a coaction of a locally compact group on a C*-algebra enjoys a universal property. We show how this important property can be deduced from a categorical framework by exploiting certain properties of the maximalization functor for coactions. We also provide a dual proof for the universal property of normalization of coactions.

Learning Novel Policies For Tasks
Proceedings of the 36th International Conference on Machine Learning, 20192019-05-13T19:17:33
arxiv.org

In this work, we present a reinforcement learning algorithm that can find a variety of policies (novel policies) for a task that is given by a task reward function. Our method does this by creating a second reward function that recognizes previously seen state sequences and rewards those by novelty, which is measured using autoencoders that have been trained on state sequences from previously discovered policies. We present a two-objective update technique for policy gradient algorithms in which each update of the policy is a compromise between improving the task reward and improving the novelty reward. Using this method, we end up with a collection of policies that solves a given task as well as carrying out action sequences that are distinct from one another. We demonstrate this method on maze navigation tasks, a reaching task for a simulated robot arm, and a locomotion task for a hopper. We also demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on deceptive tasks in which policy gradient methods often get stuck.
