Gravitating sources with zero energy density in cosmology
A cosmological source can have identically zero comoving energy density and still gravitate through its pressure. This differs from an energy density passing through zero at an isolated time. Maintaining zero density with nonzero pressure requires energy exchange in a nonstatic FLRW universe. We construct proportional-pressure and constant-pressure backgrounds, including steady-state, bouncing, recollapsing, and $Λ$CDM expansion histories, and relate them to creation pressure, bulk viscosity, and time-dependent vacuum descriptions. Scalar fields can realize zero density along a trajectory; imposing it as an identity on a timelike $P(X,φ)$ domain selects $P=A(φ)\sqrt{X}$, locally a signed potential-free cuscuton for nonzero $A$. We formulate linear perturbations without dividing by the vanishing background density. For a nondegenerate $P(X,φ)$ scalar with a timelike field gradient, zero density and negative pressure cannot coexist with positive kinetic and gradient coefficients when the interaction leaves its principal kinetic structure unchanged. Two models couple the scalar to number-conserving dust through a field-dependent mass. The proportional-pressure trajectory is a …
Dynamical behavior and bifurcation analysis for a theoretical model of dengue fever transmission with incubation period and delayed recovery
As offered by the World Health Organisation (WHO), close to half of the population in the world's resides in dengue-risk zones. Dengue viruses are transmitted to individuals by Aedes mosquito species infected bite (Ae. Albopictus of Ae. aegypti). These mosquitoes can transmit other viruses, including Zika and Chikungunya. In this research, a mathematical model is formulated to reflect different time delays considered in both extrinsic and intrinsic incubation periods, as well as in the recovery periods of infectious individuals. Preliminary results for the non-delayed model including positivity and boundedness of solutions, non-dimensionalization and equalibria analysis are presented. The threshold parameter (reproduction number) of the model is obtained via next generation matrix schemes. The stability analysis of the model revealed that various dynamical behaviour can be observed depending on delay parameters, where in particular the effect of delay in the recovery time of infectious individuals may lead to substantial changes in the dynamics. The ideas presented in this paper can be applied to other infectious diseases, providing qualitative evaluations for understanding time …
Surfaces in a pseudo-sphere with harmonic or 1-type pseudo-spherical Gauss map
We give a complete classification of Riemannian and Lorentzian surfaces of arbitrary codimension in a pseudo-sphere whose pseudo-spherical Gauss maps are of 1-type or, in particular, harmonic. In some cases a concrete global classification is obtained, while in other cases the solutions are described by an explicit system of partial differential equations.
Ricci Solitons on Pseudo-Riemannian Hypersurfaces of 4-dimensional Minkowski space
In this article, we get classification theorems for a Ricci soliton on the pseudo-Riemannian hypersurface of the Minkowski space $\mathbb{E}^4_1$ taking the potential vector field as the tangent component of the position vector of the pseudo-Riemannian hypersurface, denoted by $(M,g,{\bf x}^T,λ)$ in both Riemannian and Lorentzian settings. First, we obtain the necessary and sufficient condition that a pseudo-Riemannian hypersurface $(M,g)$ in $\mathbb{E}^4_1$ admits a Ricci soliton $(M,g,{\bf x}^T,λ)$. In each of the form of the shape operator of a pseudo-Riemannian hypersurface, we obtain characterization a Ricci soliton on a pseudo-Riemannian hypersurface. More precisely, we show that totally umbilical hypersurfaces, hyperbolic and a pseudo-spherical cylinder in $\mathbb{E}^4_1$ is a shrinking Ricci soliton whose the potential vector field is the tangent part of the position vector. Furthermore, we conclude that there exists only a shrinking Ricci soliton on a Lorentzian isoparametric hypersurface in $\mathbb{E}^4_1$ with nondiagonalizable shape operator whose the minimal polynomial has double real roots.
A Vision Transformer for ECG-Based Detection of Left Ventricular Systolic Dysfunction Across Multiple Clinical Sites
Reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is frequently asymptomatic and often detected only after advanced heart failure develops. Electrocardiograms are recorded routinely yet underused for this condition, because reduced LVEF has no single diagnostic waveform. We trained an ensemble of vision transformers from scratch to detect reduced LVEF ($\leq$40%) from 12-lead ECGs, analyzing each heartbeat individually, using 10,142 patients across seven sites in three US health systems. In a held-out external cohort of 4,092 patients from three geographically independent US clinical sites at a real-world reduced-LVEF prevalence of 8.72%, the model achieved an AUROC of 0.88 (95% CI 0.86-0.89), sensitivity 81.2%, specificity 81.0%, and negative predictive value 97.8%. Sensitivity remained high across sex, race, ethnicity, and comorbidity subgroups, while specificity was lower in older patients and those with atrial fibrillation or cardiomyopathy. Beat-level attention maps provided interpretability into the model's predictions, showing consistent focus on the QRS complex rather than the P wave. These findings support the potential of routine ECGs as a scalable first-pass triage step …
Can LLMs Correct Physicians, Yet? Investigating Effective Interaction Methods in the Medical Domain
We explore the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) to assist and potentially correct physicians in medical decision-making tasks. We evaluate several LLMs, including Meditron, Llama2, and Mistral, to analyze the ability of these models to interact effectively with physicians across different scenarios. We consider questions from PubMedQA and several tasks, ranging from binary (yes/no) responses to long answer generation, where the answer of the model is produced after an interaction with a physician. Our findings suggest that prompt design significantly influences the downstream accuracy of LLMs and that LLMs can provide valuable feedback to physicians, challenging incorrect diagnoses and contributing to more accurate decision-making. For example, when the physician is accurate 38% of the time, Mistral can produce the correct answer, improving accuracy up to 74% depending on the prompt being used, while Llama2 and Meditron models exhibit greater sensitivity to prompt choice. Our analysis also uncovers the challenges of ensuring that LLM-generated suggestions are pertinent and useful, emphasizing the need for further research in this area.
Surfaces in Robertson-Walker Space-Times with Positive Relative Nullity
In this article, we study space-like and time-like surfaces in a Robertson-Walker space-time,, denoted by $L^4_1(f,c)$, having positive relative nullity. First, we give the necessary and sufficient conditions for such space-like and time-like surfaces in $L^4_1(f,c)$. Then, we obtain the local classification theorems for space-like and time-like surfaces in $L^4_1(f,0)$ with positive relative nullity. Finally, we consider the space-like and time-like surfaces in $\mathbb{E}^1_1\times\mathbb{S}^3$ and $\mathbb{E}^1_1\times\mathbb{H}^3$ with positive relative nullity. These are the special spaces of $L^4_1(f,c)$ when the warping function $f$ is a constant function, with $c=1$ for $\mathbb{E}^1_1\times\mathbb{S}^3$ and $c=-1$ for $\mathbb{E}^1_1\times\mathbb{H}^3$.
A Mathematical Model of Dengue Transmission Incorporating Hospital Capacity and Threshold-Based Fogging Interventions
Dengue remains a major public health challenge in tropical regions, and recurring outbreaks suggest that current intervention strategies are not yet fully effective. Existing mathematical models typically assume unlimited hospital capacity and continuously applied fogging, neglecting practical constraints that strongly influence disease control. We develop a non-smooth ordinary differential equation model of dengue transmission that incorporates finite hospital capacity and a threshold-triggered fogging strategy activated when reported infections exceed a prescribed fraction of the available capacity. The model exhibits three epidemiologically relevant operating regimes, reflecting changes in hospitalization and vector-control policies as the epidemic progresses. We establish the existence and local stability of the disease-free and endemic equilibria. Numerical continuation confirms the analytical results and reveals boundary-equilibrium bifurcations at the switching thresholds, a Hopf bifurcation after hospital capacity is exceeded leading to sustained oscillatory outbreaks, and a fold bifurcation near the epidemic threshold that generates additional unstable equilibria. We …
Impact of 150keV and 590keV proton irradiation on monolayer MoS2
We present a comprehensive study on the effects of proton irradiation at different energies (150 and 590 keV) with the fluence of 1x 1012 proton/cm2 on monolayer MoS2. This study not only improves our understanding of the influence of high-energy proton beams on MoS2 but also has implications for radiation-induced changes in device processing and engineering of devices from multilayer MoS2 starting material. Increasing defect density with decreasing proton irradiation energy was observed from photoluminescence spectroscopy study. These defects are attributed to sulfur vacancies observed through x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and confirmed by transmission electron microscope imaging. Scanning electron microscopy images showed the creation of grain boundaries after proton irradiation. A higher degree of surface deformation was detected with lower irradiation energies through atomic force microscopy. Inter-defect distance is increased with the increase in proton energy irradiation as estimated by transmission electron microscopy imaging. Raman spectroscopy reveals negligible structural changes in the crystal quality after the irradiation. These deformation damages due to …
Interaction between stimulated current injection and polariton condensate
In this paper, we see a strong effect of the injected current on the light emission from the polariton condensate in an n-i-n structure, when we monitor the luminescence intensity under applied bias at various pump powers. We present here three thresholds for nonlinear increase of the intensity. We show that small changes of the incoherent injected current lead to stimulated enhancement of the coherent light emission from free carriers. We conclude that the polariton condensate-current system is a highly nonlinear electro-optical system.
