Modeling and analysis of a novel two-strain dengue epidemics model considering secondary infections with increased mortality
2026-01-12T10:39:19
arxiv.org

In this study, we develop and analyze a deterministic two-strain host-vector model for dengue transmission that incorporates key immuno-epidemiological mechanisms, including temporary cross-immunity, antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE), disease-induced mortality during secondary infections, and explicit vector co-infection. The human population is divided into compartments for primary and secondary infections, while the mosquito population includes single- and co-infected classes. ADE is modeled through distinct primary ($α$) and secondary ($σ$) transmission rates. Using the next-generation matrix method, we derive the basic reproduction number $R_0$ and establish the local stability of the disease-free equilibrium for $R_0 < 1$. Analytical results show that one-strain endemic equilibria lose stability under ADE conditions ($σ> α$), allowing invasion by a heterologous strain. Employing center-manifold theory and numerical continuation (COCO), we demonstrate the occurrence of backward bifurcation, bistability between disease-free and endemic states, and Hopf-induced oscillations. Numerical simulations confirm transitions among disease-free, endemic, and periodic regimes as key …

A comprehensive numerical investigation of a coupled mathematical model of neuronal excitability

arxiv.org

Being an example for a relaxation oscillator, the FitzHugh-Nagumo model has been widely employed for describing the generation of action potentials. In this paper, we begin with a biological interpretation of what the subsequent mathematical and numerical analyses of the model entail. The interaction between action potential variable and recovery variable is then revisited through linear stability analysis around the equilibrium and local stability conditions are determined. Analytical results are compared with numerical simulations. The study aims to show an alternative approach regarding Taylor polynomials and constructed difference scheme which play a key role in the numerical approach for the problem. The robustness of the schemes is investigated in terms of convergency and stability of the techniques. This systematic approach by the combination of numerical techniques provides beneficial results which are uniquely designed for the FitzHugh-Nagumo model. We describe the matrix representations with the collocation points. Then the method is applied in order to acquire a system of nonlinear algebraic equations. On the other hand, we apply finite difference scheme and its …

Minus Partial Order in Regular Modules
Comm. Algebra, 48(10)(2020), 4542-45532019-07-03T20:07:41
arxiv.org

The minus partial order is already known for sets of matrices over a field and bounded linear operators on arbitrary Hilbert spaces. Recently, this partial order has been studied on Rickart rings. In this paper, we extend the concept of the minus relation to the module theoretic setting and prove that this relation is a partial order when the module is regular. Moreover, various characterizations of the minus partial order in regular modules are presented and some well-known results are also generalized.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Biomarkers of Human Gut Microbiota Selected via Ensemble Feature Selection Methods

arxiv.org

The tremendous boost in the next generation sequencing and in the omics technologies makes it possible to characterize human gut microbiome (the collective genomes of the microbial community that reside in our gastrointestinal tract). While some of these microorganisms are considered as essential regulators of our immune system, some others can cause several diseases such as Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD), diabetes, and cancer. IBD, is a gut related disorder where the deviations from the healthy gut microbiome are considered to be associated with IBD. Although existing studies attempt to unveal the composition of the gut microbiome in relation to IBD diseases, a comprehensive picture is far from being complete. Due to the complexity of metagenomic studies, the applications of the state of the art machine learning techniques became popular to address a wide range of questions in the field of metagenomic data analysis. In this regard, using IBD associated metagenomics dataset, this study utilizes both supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms, i) to generate a classification model that aids IBD diagnosis, ii) to discover IBD associated biomarkers, iii) to find …

On rotational surfaces in pseudo-Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^4_t$ with pointwise 1-type Gauss map

arxiv.org

In this work, we study some classes of rotational surfaces in the pseudo-Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^4_t$ with profile curves lying in 2-dimensional planes. First, we determine all such surfaces in the Minkowski 4-space $\mathbb{E}^4_1$ with pointwise 1-type Gauss map of the first kind and second kind. Then, we obtain rotational surfaces in $\mathbb{E}^4_2$ with zero mean curvature and having pointwise 1--type Gauss map of second kind.

Predictability-Based Curiosity-Guided Action Symbol Discovery
2025-05-23T17:51:49
arxiv.org

Discovering symbolic representations for skills is essential for abstract reasoning and efficient planning in robotics. Previous neuro-symbolic robotic studies mostly focused on discovering perceptual symbolic categories given a pre-defined action repertoire and generating plans with given action symbols. A truly developmental robotic system, on the other hand, should be able to discover all the abstractions required for the planning system with minimal human intervention. In this study, we propose a novel system that is designed to discover symbolic action primitives along with perceptual symbols autonomously. Our system is based on an encoder-decoder structure that takes object and action information as input and predicts the generated effect. To efficiently explore the vast continuous action parameter space, we introduce a Curiosity-Based exploration module that selects the most informative actions -- the ones that maximize the entropy in the predicted effect distribution. The discovered symbolic action primitives are then used to make plans using a symbolic tree search strategy in single- and double-object manipulation tasks. We compare our model with two baselines that use …

Dimension Reduction in Principal Component Analysis for Trees
2012-02-10T21:21:01
arxiv.org

The statistical analysis of tree structured data is a new topic in statistics with wide application areas. Some Principal Component Analysis (PCA) ideas were previously developed for binary tree spaces. In this study, we extend these ideas to the more general space of rooted and labeled trees. We re-define concepts such as tree-line and forward principal component tree-line for this more general space, and generalize the optimal algorithm that finds them. We then develop an analog of classical dimension reduction technique in PCA for the tree space. To do this, we define the components that carry the least amount of variation of a tree data set, called backward principal components. We present an optimal algorithm to find them. Furthermore, we investigate the relationship of these the forward principal components, and prove a path-independency property between the forward and backward techniques. We apply our methods to a data set of brain artery data set of 98 subjects. Using our techniques, we investigate how aging affects the brain artery structure of males and females. We also analyze a data set of organization structure of a large US company and explore the structural …

Visualizing the Structure of Large Trees
Electronic Journal of Statistics 2011, Vol. 5, 405-4202010-01-06T19:19:49
arxiv.org

This study introduces a new method of visualizing complex tree structured objects. The usefulness of this method is illustrated in the context of detecting unexpected features in a data set of very large trees. The major contribution is a novel two-dimensional graphical representation of each tree, with a covariate coded by color. The motivating data set contains three dimensional representations of brain artery systems of 105 subjects. Due to inaccuracies inherent in the medical imaging techniques, issues with the reconstruction algo- rithms and inconsistencies introduced by manual adjustment, various discrepancies are present in the data. The proposed representation enables quick visual detection of the most common discrepancies. For our driving example, this tool led to the modification of 10% of the artery trees and deletion of 6.7%. The benefits of our cleaning method are demonstrated through a statistical hypothesis test on the effects of aging on vessel structure. The data cleaning resulted in improved significance levels.

Joint Discovery of Object and Action Symbols through Effect Prediction for Robotic Manipulation Planning
2026-06-22T11:58:11
arxiv.org

To perform complex manipulation planning, autonomous robots are required to abstract continuous, high-dimensional sensorimotor interactions into discrete object and action representations. Earlier work either categorized objects based on visual appearances, which fails to distinguish objects that appear similar but behave differently, or based on effects under interaction, but was limited to predefined actions. To address these limitations, we propose a model that jointly discovers high-level manipulation primitives and object categories through a binary bottleneck layer, trained to predict multi-modal outcomes, including object motion, contact, and force feedback, from random interaction data. Building on these discovered binary representations, we leverage a discrete planning method that uses intermediate steps in the predicted effect trajectory to enable partial action executions for precise low-level control. Additionally, we evaluate our framework's generalization capabilities on novel objects by assigning object categories through comparing a small number of interaction effects with the predicted effects of learned object symbols, enabling few-shot generalization based on …

On rotational surfaces with zero mean curvature in the pseudo-Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}_2^4$

arxiv.org

In this work, we study a class of rotational surfaces in the pseudo-Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}_2^4$ whose profile curves lie in two-dimensional planes. We solve the differential equation that characterizes the rotational surfaces with zero mean curvature to determine the profile curves of such rotational surfaces. Then, we give some explicit parametrization of maximal rotational surfaces and the timelike surfaces with zero mean curvature in $\mathbb{E}_2^4$.
