ATM Networks: Issues and Challenges Ahead
1998-09-24T04:39:05
arxiv.org

The paper begins with a discussion of current trends in networking and a historical reviews of past networking technologies some of which failed. This leads us to the discussion about what it takes for a new technology to succeed and what challenges we face in making the current dream of a seamless world-wide high-speed ATM network a reality. Issues in using ATM cells for very high speed applications are presented. Ensuring that the users benefit from ATM networks involves several other related disciplines. These are reviewed.

Modeling Traffic Management in ATM Networks with OPNET
1998-09-23T02:17:51
arxiv.org

Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) is the new generation of computer and communication networks that are being deployed throughout the telecommunication industry as well as in campus backbones. ATM technology distinguishes itself from the previous networking protocols in that it has the latest traffic management technology and thus allows guaranteeing delay, throughput, and other performance measures. This in turn, allows users to integrate voice, video, and data on the same network. Available bit rate (ABR) service in ATM has been designed to fairly distribute all unused capacity to data traffic and is specified in the ATM Forum's Traffic Management (TM4.0) standard. This paper will describe the OPNET models that have been developed for ATM and ABR design and analysis.

Tactical Reframing of Online Disinformation Campaigns Against The Istanbul Convention
2021-05-27T18:59:12
arxiv.org

In March 2021, Turkey withdrew from The Istanbul Convention, a human-rights treaty that addresses violence against women, citing issues with the convention's implicit recognition of sexual and gender minorities. In this work, we trace disinformation campaigns related to the Istanbul Convention and its associated Turkish law that circulate on divorced men's rights Facebook groups. We find that these groups adjusted the narrative and focus of the campaigns to appeal to a larger audience, which we refer to as "tactical reframing." Initially, the men organized in a grass-roots manner to campaign against the Turkish law that was passed to codify the convention, focusing on one-sided custody of children and indefinite alimony. Later, they reframed their campaign and began attacking the Istanbul Convention, highlighting its acknowledgment of homosexuality. This case study highlights how disinformation campaigns can be used to weaponize homophobia in order to limit the rights of women. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case study that analyzes a narrative reframing in the context of a disinformation campaign on social media.

A Survey of Protocols and Open Issues in ATM Multipoint Communication
1998-09-24T02:56:49
arxiv.org

Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks must define multicast capabilities in order to efficiently support numerous applications, such as video conferencing and distributed applications, in addition to LAN emulation (LANE) and Internet protocol (IP) multicasting. Several problems and issues arise in ATM multicasting, such as signaling, routing, connection admission control, and traffic management problems. IP integrated services over ATM poses further challenges to ATM multicasting. Scalability and simplicity are the two main concerns for ATM multicasting. This paper provides a survey of the current work on multicasting problems in general, and ATM multicasting in particular. A number of proposed schemes is examined, such as the schemes MARS, MCS, SEAM, SMART, RSVP, and various multipoint traffic management and transport-layer schemes. The paper also indicates a number of key open issues that remain unresolved.

Satellite ATM Network Architectural Considerations and TCP/IP Performance
1998-09-23T15:54:26
arxiv.org

In this paper, we have provided a summary of the design options in Satellite-ATM technology. A satellite ATM network consists of a space segment of satellites connected by inter-satellite crosslinks, and a ground segment of the various ATM networks. A satellite-ATM interface module connects the satellite network to the ATM networks and performs various call and control functions. A network control center performs various network management and resource allocation functions. Several issues such as the ATM service model, media access protocols, and traffic management issues must be considered when designing a satellite ATM network to effectively transport Internet traffic. We have presented the buffer requirements for TCP/IP traffic over ATM-UBR for satellite latencies. Our results are based on TCP with selective acknowledgments and a per-VC buffer management policy at the switches. A buffer size of about 0.5 * RTT to 1 * RTT is sufficient to provide over 98% throughput to infinite TCP traffic for long latency networks and a large number of sources. This buffer requirement is independent of the number of sources. The fairness is high for a large numbers of sources because of the …

Link Enhancer for Vehicular Wireless ATM Communications
2008-04-24T18:54:11
arxiv.org

Majority of the applications used in defense are voice, video and data oriented and has strict QoS requirements. One of the technologies that enabled this is Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networking. Traditional ATM networks are wired networks. But Tactical networks are meant to be mobile and this necessitates the use of radio relays for Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communications. ATM networks assume a physical link layer BER of 10^-9 or better because of the availability of reliable media like optical fiber links. But this assumption is no longer valid when ATM switches are connected through radio relay where error rates are in the rage of 10^-3. This paper presents the architecture of a Link Enhancer meant to improve the Bit Error Rate of the Wireless links used for V2I and V2V communications from 1 in 10^4 to 1 in 10^8

SFAMSS: a secure framework for atm machines via secret sharing
2015-05-12T16:15:56
arxiv.org

As ATM applications deploy for a banking system, the need to secure communications will become critical. However, multicast protocols do not fit the point-to-point model of most network security protocols which were designed with unicast communications in mind. In recent years, we have seen the emergence and the growing of ATMs (Automatic Teller Machines) in banking systems. Many banks are extending their activity and increasing transactions by using ATMs. ATM will allow them to reach more customers in a cost effective way and to make their transactions fast and efficient. However, communicating in the network must satisfy integrity, privacy, confidentiality, authentication and non-repudiation. Many frameworks have been implemented to provide security in communication and transactions. In this paper, we analyze ATM communication protocol and propose a novel framework for ATM systems that allows entities communicate in a secure way without using a lot of storage. We describe the architecture and operation of SFAMSS in detail. Our framework is implemented with Java and the software architecture, and its components are studied in detailed.

A Control and Management Network for Wireless ATM Systems
ACM-Baltzer Wireless Networks (WINET), volume 3, pages 267-283,19971999-04-22T12:58:23
arxiv.org

This paper describes the design of a control and management network (orderwire) for a mobile wireless Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network. This mobile wireless ATM network is part of the Rapidly Deployable Radio Network (RDRN). The orderwire system consists of a packet radio network which overlays the mobile wireless ATM network, each network element in this network uses Global Positioning System (GPS) information to control a beamforming antenna subsystem which provides for spatial reuse. This paper also proposes a novel Virtual Network Configuration (VNC) algorithm for predictive network configuration. A mobile ATM Private Network-Network Interface (PNNI) based on VNC is also discussed. Finally, as a prelude to the system implementation, results of a Maisie simulation of the orderwire system are discussed.

Applied metamodelling for ATM performance simulations
2023-08-07T08:46:10
arxiv.org

The use of Air traffic management (ATM) simulators for planing and operations can be challenging due to their modelling complexity. This paper presents XALM (eXplainable Active Learning Metamodel), a three-step framework integrating active learning and SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) values into simulation metamodels for supporting ATM decision-making. XALM efficiently uncovers hidden relationships among input and output variables in ATM simulators, those usually of interest in policy analysis. Our experiments show XALM's predictive performance comparable to the XGBoost metamodel with fewer simulations. Additionally, XALM exhibits superior explanatory capabilities compared to non-active learning metamodels. Using the `Mercury' (flight and passenger) ATM simulator, XALM is applied to a real-world scenario in Paris Charles de Gaulle airport, extending an arrival manager's range and scope by analysing six variables. This case study illustrates XALM's effectiveness in enhancing simulation interpretability and understanding variable interactions. By addressing computational challenges and improving explainability, XALM complements traditional simulation-based analyses. Lastly, we …
