A Principal Component Analysis for Trees
The active field of Functional Data Analysis (about understanding the variation in a set of curves) has been recently extended to Object Oriented Data Analysis, which considers populations of more general objects. A particularly challenging extension of this set of ideas is to populations of tree-structured objects. We develop an analog of Principal Component Analysis for trees, based on the notion of tree-lines, and propose numerically fast (linear time) algorithms to solve the resulting optimization problems. The solutions we obtain are used in the analysis of a data set of 73 individuals, where each data object is a tree of blood vessels in one person's brain.
The Natural partial order on modules
The Mitsch order is already known as a natural partial order for semigroups and rings. The purpose of this paper is to further study of the Mitsch order on modules by investigating basic properties via endomorphism rings. And so this study also contribute to the results related to the orders on rings. As a module theoretic analog of the Mitsch order, we show that this order is a partial order on arbitrary modules. Among others, lattice properties of the Mitsch order and the relations between the Mitsch order and the other well-known orders, such as, the minus order, the Jones order, the direct sum order and the space pre-order on modules are studied. In particular, we prove that the minus order is the Mitsch order and we supply an example to show that the converse does not hold in general.
The Void Galaxy Survey: Photometry, structure and identity of void galaxies
We analyze photometry from deep B-band images of 59 void galaxies in the Void Galaxy Survey (VGS), together with their near-infrared 3.6$μ$m and 4.5$μ$m Spitzer photometry. The VGS galaxies constitute a sample of void galaxies that were selected by a geometric-topological procedure from the SDSS DR7 data release, and which populate the deep interior of voids. Our void galaxies span a range of absolute B-magnitude from $\rm{M_B=-15.5}$ to $\rm{M_B=-20}$, while at the 3.6$μ$m band their magnitudes range from $\rm{M_{3.6}=-18}$ to $\rm{M_{3.6}=-24}$. Their B-[3.6] colour and structural parameters indicate these are star forming galaxies. A good reflection of the old stellar population, the near-infrared band photometry also provide a robust estimate of the stellar mass, which for the VGS galaxies we confirm to be smaller than $3 \times 10^{10}$ M$_\odot$. In terms of the structural parameters and morphology, our findings align with other studies in that our VGS galaxy sample consists mostly of small late-type galaxies. Most of them are similar to Sd-Sm galaxies, although a few are irregularly shaped galaxies. The sample even includes two early-type galaxies, one of which is an AGN. …
Lagrangian submanifolds of the nearly Kähler $\mathbb{S}^3 \times \mathbb{S}^3$ from minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$
We study non-totally geodesic Lagrangian submanifolds of the nearly Kähler $\mathbb{S}^3 \times \mathbb{S}^3$ for which the projection on the first component is nowhere of maximal rank. We show that this property can be expressed in terms of the so called angle functions and that such Lagrangian submanifolds are closely related to minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$. Indeed, starting from an arbitrary minimal surface, we can construct locally a large family of such Lagrangian immersions, including one exceptional example.
pyKCN: A Python Tool for Bridging Scientific Knowledge
The study of research trends is pivotal for understanding scientific development on specific topics. Traditionally, this involves keyword analysis within scholarly literature, yet comprehensive tools for such analysis are scarce, especially those capable of parsing large datasets with precision. pyKCN, a Python toolkit, addresses this gap by automating keyword cleaning, extraction and trend analysis from extensive academic corpora. It is equipped with modules for text processing, deduplication, extraction, and advanced keyword co-occurrence and analysis, providing a granular view of research trends. This toolkit stands out by enabling researchers to visualize keyword relationships, thereby identifying seminal works and emerging trends. Its application spans diverse domains, enhancing scholars' capacity to understand developments within their fields. The implications of using pyKCN are significant. It offers an empirical basis for predicting research trends, which can inform funding directions, policy-making, and academic curricula. $K^α$-translators of offset surfaces
In this paper, we study $K^α$--translators on parallel surfaces and canal surfaces in 3-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^3$. First, we investigate the condition under which two parallel surfaces can become $K^α$--translators moving with the same speed $w$. Then, we examine $K^α$--translators on canal surfaces and we show that if a canal surface is $K^α$--translator, then it must be a surface of revolution in $\mathbb{E}^3$. We also provide examples for moving a surface of revolution under $K$--flow (Gauss curvature flow) and $K^{-1/2}$--flow (inverse Gauss curvature flow) along a direction $w=(0,0,1)$ and we illustrate such surfaces using Wolfram Mathematica 10.4. Finally, we prove that no $K^α$--translators exist on the parallel surface of a rotational surface obtained from a canal surface with the same speed $w$, while the such rotational surfaces itself is a $K^α$--translator with speed $w$.
Does CoT-Pass@k Really Check the CoT? A Multilingual Mathematical Audit
Pass@k measures whether a model reaches a correct answer under repeated sampling, but never how: a lucky guess counts the same as sound reasoning. CoT-Pass@k was proposed to close that gap, adding an LLM-as-judge that must assess a solution's reasoning chain before it counts. Its value rests entirely on one assumption: that the judge catches flawed reasoning. That assumption has never been tested inside the metric that depends on it, and never outside English, though the metric's claims concern models used in many languages. We report the first audit of that verification step, run under the metric's own protocol on a multilingual suite of five mathematical benchmarks in English, Turkish and Portuguese, two of them natively written. We corrupt correct solutions with deterministic edits that damage the chain and the final answer separately. We observe that all three judges accept corrupted chains almost as often as clean ones. V4-Flash and Qwen3.6 reject a solution sharply only when its final answer is wrong and accept a wrong answer more readily when the chain agrees with it; the metric's own judge accepts most wrong answers as well. Our study shows that chain-answer agreement …
The adjacency matrix of one type of graph and the Fibonacci numbers
Recently there is huge interest in graph theory and intensive study on computing integer powers of matrices. In this paper, we investigate relationships between one type of graph and well-known Fibonacci sequence. In this content, we consider the adjacency matrix of one type of graph with 2k (k=1,2,...) vertices. It is also known that for any positive integer r, the (i,j)th entry of A^{r} (A is the adjacency matrix of the graph) is just the number of walks from vertex i to vertex j, that use exactly k edges.
The Void Galaxy Survey: Star Formation Properties
We study the star formation properties of 59 void galaxies as part of the Void Galaxy Survey (VGS). Current star formation rates are derived from $\rm{Hα}$ and recent star formation rates from near-UV imaging. In addition, infrared 3.4 $\rm{μm}$, 4.6 $\rm{μm}$, 12 $\rm{μm}$ and 22 $\rm{μm}$ WISE emission is used as star formation and mass indicator. Infrared and optical colours show that the VGS sample displays a wide range of dust and metallicity properties. We combine these measurements with stellar and HI masses to measure the specific SFRs ($\rm{SFR/M_{*}}$) and star formation efficiencies ($\rm{SFR/M_{HI}}$). We compare the star formation properties of our sample with galaxies in the more moderate density regions of the cosmic web, 'the field'. We find that specific SFRs of the VGS galaxies as a function of stellar and HI mass are similar to those of the galaxies in these field regions. Their $\rm{SFRα}$ is slightly elevated than the galaxies in the field for a given total HI mass. In the global star formation picture presented by Kennicutt-Schmidt, VGS galaxies fall into the regime of low average star formation and correspondingly low HI surface density. Their mean …
Multimodal Limbless Crawling Soft Robot with a Kirigami Skin
Limbless creatures can crawl on flat surfaces by deforming their bodies and interacting with asperities on the ground, offering a biological blueprint for designing efficient limbless robots. Inspired by this natural locomotion, we present a soft robot capable of navigating complex terrains using a combination of rectilinear motion and asymmetric steering gaits. The robot is made of a pair of antagonistic inflatable soft actuators covered with a flexible kirigami skin with asymmetric frictional properties. The robot's rectilinear locomotion is achieved through cyclic inflation of internal chambers with precise phase shifts, enabling forward progression. Steering is accomplished using an asymmetric gait, allowing for both in-place rotation and wide turns. To validate its mobility in obstacle-rich environments, we tested the robot in an arena with coarse substrates and multiple obstacles. Real-time feedback from onboard proximity sensors, integrated with a human-machine interface (HMI), allowed adaptive control to avoid collisions. This study highlights the potential of bioinspired soft robots for applications in confined or unstructured environments, such as search-and-rescue …
