Using Convolutional Neural Networks for Determining Reticulocyte Percentage in Cats
2018-03-13T15:17:30
arxiv.org

Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), specifically in computer vision (CV) and deep learning (DL), have created opportunities for novel systems in many fields. In the last few years, deep learning applications have demonstrated impressive results not only in fields such as autonomous driving and robotics, but also in the field of medicine, where they have, in some cases, even exceeded human-level performance. However, despite the huge potential, adoption of deep learning-based methods is still slow in many areas, especially in veterinary medicine, where we haven't been able to find any research papers using modern convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in medical image processing. We believe that using deep learning-based medical imaging can enable more accurate, faster and less expensive diagnoses in veterinary medicine. In order to do so, however, these methods have to be accessible to everyone in this field, not just to computer scientists. To show the potential of this technology, we present results on a real-world task in veterinary medicine that is usually done manually: feline reticulocyte percentage. Using an open source Keras implementation of the Single-Shot …

Production and decay of up-type and down-type new heavy quarks through anomalous interactions at the LHC
2014-10-20T21:45:57
arxiv.org

We study the process pp->QVX (where Q=t,b and V=g,gamma,Z) through the anomalous interactions of the new heavy quarks at the LHC. Considering the present limits on the masses and mixings, the signatures of the heavy quark anomalous interactions are discussed and analysed at the LHC for the center of mass energy of 13 TeV. An important sensitivity to anomalous couplings kappa_{g}^{t'}/Lambda=0.10 TeV^{-1}, kappa_γ^{t'}/Lambda=0.14 TeV^{-1}, kappa_{Z}^{t'}/Lambda=0.19 TeV^{-1} and kappa_{g}^{b'}/Lambda=0.15 TeV^{-1}, kappa_{Z}^{b'}/Lambda=0.19 TeV$^{-1}, kappa_γ^{b'}/Lambda=0.30 TeV$^{-1} for the mass of 750 GeV of the new heavy quarks t' and b' can be reached for an integrated luminosity of L_{int}=100 fb^{-1}.

arxiv.org

The top quark could provide very important information for the Standard Model extentions due to its large mass close to the electroweak symmetry breaking scale. In this work, anomalous single top production is studied by using gamma p-->W^{+}b process at the LHeC based gamma p collider. The sensitivity to anomalous coupling kappa/Lambda could be reached down to 0.01 TeV^{-1}.

Learning to Transfer In-Hand Manipulations Using a Greedy Shape Curriculum
2023-03-14T17:08:19
arxiv.org

In-hand object manipulation is challenging to simulate due to complex contact dynamics, non-repetitive finger gaits, and the need to indirectly control unactuated objects. Further adapting a successful manipulation skill to new objects with different shapes and physical properties is a similarly challenging problem. In this work, we show that natural and robust in-hand manipulation of simple objects in a dynamic simulation can be learned from a high quality motion capture example via deep reinforcement learning with careful designs of the imitation learning problem. We apply our approach on both single-handed and two-handed dexterous manipulations of diverse object shapes and motions. We then demonstrate further adaptation of the example motion to a more complex shape through curriculum learning on intermediate shapes morphed between the source and target object. While a naive curriculum of progressive morphs often falls short, we propose a simple greedy curriculum search algorithm that can successfully apply to a range of objects such as a teapot, bunny, bottle, train, and elephant.

BodyPressure -- Inferring Body Pose and Contact Pressure from a Depth Image
2021-05-20T17:55:31
arxiv.org

Contact pressure between the human body and its surroundings has important implications. For example, it plays a role in comfort, safety, posture, and health. We present a method that infers contact pressure between a human body and a mattress from a depth image. Specifically, we focus on using a depth image from a downward facing camera to infer pressure on a body at rest in bed occluded by bedding, which is directly applicable to the prevention of pressure injuries in healthcare. Our approach involves augmenting a real dataset with synthetic data generated via a soft-body physics simulation of a human body, a mattress, a pressure sensing mat, and a blanket. We introduce a novel deep network that we trained on an augmented dataset and evaluated with real data. The network contains an embedded human body mesh model and uses a white-box model of depth and pressure image generation. Our network successfully infers body pose, outperforming prior work. It also infers contact pressure across a 3D mesh model of the human body, which is a novel capability, and does so in the presence of occlusion from blankets.

Generative Modeling with Orbit-Space Particle Flow Matching
2026-05-04T04:51:35
arxiv.org

We present Orbit-Space Geometric Probability Paths (OGPP), a particle-native flow-matching framework for generative modeling of particle systems. OGPP is motivated by two insights: (i) particles are defined up to permutation symmetries, so anonymous indexing inflates per-index target variance and yields curved, hard-to-learn flows; and (ii) particles live in physical space, so the flow terminal velocity has physical meaning and can encode geometric attributes, e.g., surface normals. OGPP instantiates three key components: (1) orbit-space canonicalization of the probability-path terminal endpoint, (2) particle index embeddings for role specialization, and (3) geometric probability paths with arc-length-aware terminal velocities that generate normals as a byproduct of the flow. We evaluate OGPP on minimal-surface benchmarks, where it reduces metric error by up to two orders of magnitude in a single inference step; on ShapeNet, where it matches the state of the art with 5x fewer steps and reaches airplane EMD comparable to DiT-3D with 26x fewer parameters and 5x fewer steps; and on single-shape encoding, where it produces normals and reconstructions competitive with 6D generators …

Temporal Registration in In-Utero Volumetric MRI Time Series
2016-08-12T20:40:24
arxiv.org

We present a robust method to correct for motion and deformations for in-utero volumetric MRI time series. Spatio-temporal analysis of dynamic MRI requires robust alignment across time in the presence of substantial and unpredictable motion. We make a Markov assumption on the nature of deformations to take advantage of the temporal structure in the image data. Forward message passing in the corresponding hidden Markov model (HMM) yields an estimation algorithm that only has to account for relatively small motion between consecutive frames. We demonstrate the utility of the temporal model by showing that its use improves the accuracy of the segmentation propagation through temporal registration. Our results suggest that the proposed model captures accurately the temporal dynamics of deformations in in-utero MRI time series.

An empirical Bayesian analysis applied to the globular cluster pulsar population
2013-09-27T18:12:15
arxiv.org

We describe an empirical Bayesian approach to determine the most likely size of an astronomical population of sources of which only a small subset are observed above some limiting flux density threshold. The method is most naturally applied to astronomical source populations at a common distance (e.g.,stellar populations in globular clusters), and can be applied even to populations where a survey detects no objects. The model allows for the inclusion of physical parameters of the stellar population and the detection process. As an example, we apply this method to the current sample of radio pulsars in Galactic globular clusters. Using the sample of flux density limits on pulsar surveys in 94 globular clusters published by Boyles et al., we examine a large number of population models with different dependencies. We find that models which include the globular cluster two-body encounter rate, $Γ$, are strongly favoured over models in which this is not a factor. The optimal model is one in which the mean number of pulsars is proportional to $\exp(1.5 \log Γ)$. This model agrees well with earlier work by Hui et al. and provides strong support to the idea that the two-body encounter …

Learning to Navigate Cloth using Haptics
2017-03-20T18:12:53
arxiv.org

We present a controller that allows an arm-like manipulator to navigate deformable cloth garments in simulation through the use of haptic information. The main challenge of such a controller is to avoid getting tangled in, tearing or punching through the deforming cloth. Our controller aggregates force information from a number of haptic-sensing spheres all along the manipulator for guidance. Based on haptic forces, each individual sphere updates its target location, and the conflicts that arise between this set of desired positions is resolved by solving an inverse kinematic problem with constraints. Reinforcement learning is used to train the controller for a single haptic-sensing sphere, where a training run is terminated (and thus penalized) when large forces are detected due to contact between the sphere and a simplified model of the cloth. In simulation, we demonstrate successful navigation of a robotic arm through a variety of garments, including an isolated sleeve, a jacket, a shirt, and shorts. Our controller out-performs two baseline controllers: one without haptics and another that was trained based on large forces between the sphere and cloth, but without early …

Transforming a Quadruped into a Guide Robot for the Visually Impaired: Formalizing Wayfinding, Interaction Modeling, and Safety Mechanism
Proceedings of The 7th Conference on Robot Learning, PMLR 229:2288-2303, 20232023-06-24T20:47:36
arxiv.org

This paper explores the principles for transforming a quadrupedal robot into a guide robot for individuals with visual impairments. A guide robot has great potential to resolve the limited availability of guide animals that are accessible to only two to three percent of the potential blind or visually impaired (BVI) users. To build a successful guide robot, our paper explores three key topics: (1) formalizing the navigation mechanism of a guide dog and a human, (2) developing a data-driven model of their interaction, and (3) improving user safety. First, we formalize the wayfinding task of the human-guide robot team using Markov Decision Processes based on the literature and interviews. Then we collect real human-robot interaction data from three visually impaired and six sighted people and develop an interaction model called the ``Delayed Harness'' to effectively simulate the navigation behaviors of the team. Additionally, we introduce an action shielding mechanism to enhance user safety by predicting and filtering out dangerous actions. We evaluate the developed interaction model and the safety mechanism in simulation, which greatly reduce the prediction errors and the number of …
