An Interacting Galaxy System Along a Filament in a Void
Cosmological voids provide a unique environment for the study of galaxy formation and evolution. The galaxy population in their interior have significantly different properties than average field galaxies. As part of our Void Galaxy Survey (VGS), we have found a system of three interacting galaxies (VGS_31) inside a large void. VGS_31 is a small elongated group whose members are embedded in a common HI envelope. The HI picture suggests a filamentary structure with accretion of intergalactic cold gas from the filament onto the galaxies. We present deep optical and narrow band H_alpha data, optical spectroscopy, near-UV and far-UV GALEX and CO(1-0) data. We find that one of the galaxies, a Markarian object, has a ring-like structure and a tail evident both in optical and HI. While all three galaxies form stars in their central parts, the tail and the ring of the Markarian object are devoid of star formation. We discuss these findings in terms of a gravitational interaction and ongoing growth of galaxies out of a filament. VGS_31 is one of the first observed examples of a filamentary structure in a void. It is an important prototype for understanding the formation of substructure in …
A Comprehensive Analysis of Adversarial Attacks against Spam Filters
Deep learning has revolutionized email filtering, which is critical to protect users from cyber threats such as spam, malware, and phishing. However, the increasing sophistication of adversarial attacks poses a significant challenge to the effectiveness of these filters. This study investigates the impact of adversarial attacks on deep learning-based spam detection systems using real-world datasets. Six prominent deep learning models are evaluated on these datasets, analyzing attacks at the word, character sentence, and AI-generated paragraph-levels. Novel scoring functions, including spam weights and attention weights, are introduced to improve attack effectiveness. This comprehensive analysis sheds light on the vulnerabilities of spam filters and contributes to efforts to improve their security against evolving adversarial threats.
A new lower bound for the number of conjugacy classes
In 2003, Héthelyi and Külshammer proposed that if $G$ is a finite group and $p$ is a prime dividing the group order, then $k(G)\geq 2\sqrt{p-1}$, and they proved this conjecture for solvable $G$ and showed that it is sharp for those primes $p$ for which $\sqrt{p-1}$ is an integer. This initiated a flurry of activity, leading to many generalizations and variations of the result; in particular, today the conjecture is known to be true for all finite groups. In this note, we put forward a natural new and stronger conjecture, which is sharp for all primes $p$, and we prove it for solvable groups, and when $p$ is large, also for arbitrary groups.
R-matrix approach to integrable systems on time scales
A general unifying framework for integrable soliton-like systems on time scales is introduced. The $R$-matrix formalism is applied to the algebra of $δ$-differential operators in terms of which one can construct infinite hierarchy of commuting vector fields. The theory is illustrated by two infinite-field integrable hierarchies on time scales which are difference counterparts of KP and mKP. The difference counterparts of AKNS and Kaup-Broer soliton systems are constructed as related finite-field restrictions.
From scale-free to Anderson localization: a size-dependent transition
Scale-free localization in non-Hermitian systems is a distinctive type of localization where the localization length of certain eigenstates, known as scale-free localized (SFL) states, scales proportionally with the system size. Unlike skin states, where the localization length is independent of the system size, SFL states maintain a spatial profile that remains invariant as the system size changes. We consider a model involving a single non-Hermitian impurity in an otherwise Hermitian one-dimensional lattice. Introducing disorder into this system transforms SFL states into Anderson-localized states. In contrast to the Hatano-Nelson model, where disorder typically leads to the localization of skin states and a size-independent Anderson transition, the scale-free localization in our model causes a size-dependent Anderson transition.
Detection of a cyclic period change in the contact binary TU UMi
This study aims at timing the eclipses of the binary star TU UMi. The times of minima are taken from the literature, from our observations in April 2004 and from TESS observations between 2019 and 2022. The orbital period analysis of the system indicates that there is a cyclic oscillation with an amplitude of 0.0081d and a period of 9.03 yr, accompanied by a continuous decrease at a rate of $dP/dt =-1.12 \times 10^{-7}\,\mathrm{d}\, \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$. We study the secular evolution of the orbital period of the system and the possibility of the existence of a third companion or the magnetic activity cycle of the primary component in the system.
Field-Driven Hysteresis of the d=3 Ising Spin Glass: Hard-Spin Mean-Field Theory
Hysteresis loops are obtained in the Ising spin-glass phase in d=3, using frustration-conserving hard-spin mean-field theory. The system is driven by a time-dependent random magnetic field H_Q that is conjugate to the spin-glass order Q, yielding a field-driven first-order phase transition through the spin-glass phase. The hysteresis loop area A of the Q-H_Q curve scales with respect to the sweep rate h of magnetic field as A-A_0 = h^b. In the spin-glass and random-bond ferromagnetic phases, the sweep-rate scaling exponent b changes with temperature T, but appears not to change with antiferromagnetic bond concentration p. By contrast, in the pure ferromagnetic phase, b does not depend on T and has a sharply different value than in the two other phases.
Transformer Encoder with Multiscale Deep Learning for Pain Classification Using Physiological Signals
Pain is a serious worldwide health problem that affects a vast proportion of the population. For efficient pain management and treatment, accurate classification and evaluation of pain severity are necessary. However, this can be challenging as pain is a subjective sensation-driven experience. Traditional techniques for measuring pain intensity, e.g. self-report scales, are susceptible to bias and unreliable in some instances. Consequently, there is a need for more objective and automatic pain intensity assessment strategies. In this paper, we develop PainAttnNet (PAN), a novel transfomer-encoder deep-learning framework for classifying pain intensities with physiological signals as input. The proposed approach is comprised of three feature extraction architectures: multiscale convolutional networks (MSCN), a squeeze-and-excitation residual network (SEResNet), and a transformer encoder block. On the basis of pain stimuli, MSCN extracts short- and long-window information as well as sequential features. SEResNet highlights relevant extracted features by mapping the interdependencies among features. The third module employs a transformer encoder consisting of three temporal …
Prime Structures in a Morita Context
In this paper, we study on the primeness and semiprimeness of a Morita context related to the rings and modules. Necessary and sufficient conditions are investigated for an ideal of a Morita context to be a prime ideal and a semiprime ideal. In particular, we determine the conditions under which a Morita context is prime and semiprime.
Rings in which every nilpotent is central
In this paper, we introduce a class of rings in which every nilpotent element is central. This class of rings generalizes so-called reduced rings. A ring $R$ is called {\it central reduced} if every nilpotent element of $R$ is central. For a ring $R$, we prove that $R$ is central reduced if and only if $R[x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n]$ is central reduced if and only if $R[[x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n]]$ is central reduced if and only if $R[x_1,x_1^{-1},x_2,x_2^{-1},\ldots,x_n,x_n^{-1}]$ is central reduced. Moreover, if $R$ is a central reduced ring, then the trivial extension $T(R,R)$ is central Armendariz.
