A Comparison of Voice-Related Quality of Life and Social Network Size in Older Adults Based on Self-Perceived Voice-Related Disability: A Cross-Sectional Study.
ObjectiveTo compare voice-related quality of life and social network size among older adults with high and low levels of self-perceived voice-related disability.Study designQuantitative, observational, and cross-sectional.MethodsThis study included 208 participants (105 women, 103 men) with a mean age of 70.24 ± 5.22 years. Participants were divided into two groups based on the cutoff score of the Turkish Aging Voice Index (TR-AVI): the high voice-related disability group (TR-AVI > 15.50) and the low voice-related disability group (TR-AVI ≤ 15.50). The Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL) and the Lubben Social Network Scale-6 (LSNS-6) were used to assess the participants.ResultsThe high voice-related disability group's scores on the V-RQOL physical functioning and social-emotional subscales, as well as their total scores, were found to be significantly lower than those of the low voice-related disability group (P < 0.001). In contrast, no significant difference was found between the groups in terms of the LSNS-6 family and friend social network size (P > 0.05). A strong negative correlation was found between the TR-AVI total score and V-RQOL scores (r = -0.557, P < 0.001). …
On the controller-stopper problems with controlled jumps
We analyze the continuous time zero-sum and cooperative controller-stopper games of Karatzas and Sudderth [Annals of Probability, 2001], Karatzas and Zamfirescu [Annals of Probability, 2008] and Karatzas and Zamfirescu [Applied Mathematics and Optimization, 2005] when the volatility of the state process is controlled as in Bayraktar and Huang [SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, 2013] but additionally when the state process has controlled jumps. We perform this analysis by first resolving the stochastic target problems (of Soner and Touzi [SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, 2002; Journal of European Mathematical Society, 2002]) with a cooperative or a non-cooperative stopper and then embedding the original problem into the latter set-up. Unlike in Bayraktar and Huang [SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, 2013] our analysis relies crucially on the Stochastic Perron method of Bayraktar and Sirbu [SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, 2013] but not the dynamic programming principle, which is difficult to prove directly for games.
Safety and equity in scaling minimally invasive surgery worldwide in 109 countries using cholecystectomy as a tracer procedure: a prospective cohort study.
Minimally invasive surgery is rapidly expanding globally, yet there is insufficient knowledge of how to scale this technology safely and equitably across diverse health systems. We aimed to identify health-system factors associated with safe implementation of minimally invasive surgery globally, using minimally invasive cholecystectomy as a tracer procedure.
Erratum to "On the market viability under proportional transaction costs"
This short note aims to point out mistakes in one of the implications for Theorem 2.8 in Bayraktar and Yu [Mathematical Finance, 28 (2018), pp. 800-838], which weakens the statement of this theorem.
Concentration of measure for Graphon particle system
We study heterogeneously interacting diffusive particle systems with mean-field type interaction characterized by an underlying graphon and their finite particle approximations. Under suitable conditions, we obtain exponential concentration estimates over a finite time horizon for both 1 and 2 Wasserstein distances between the empirical measures of the finite particle systems and the averaged law of the graphon system, extending the work of Bayraktar-Wu.
Purchasing Term Life Insurance to Reach a Bequest Goal while Consuming
We determine the optimal strategies for purchasing term life insurance and for investing in a risky financial market in order to maximize the probability of reaching a bequest goal while consuming from an investment account. We extend Bayraktar and Young (2015) by allowing the individual to purchase term life insurance to reach her bequest goal. The premium rate for life insurance, $h$, serves as a parameter to connect two seemingly unrelated problems. As the premium rate approaches $0$, covering the bequest goal becomes costless, so the individual simply wants to avoid ruin that might result from her consumption. Thus, as $h$ approaches $0$, the problem in this paper becomes equivalent to minimizing the probability of lifetime ruin, which is solved in Young (2004). On the other hand, as the premium rate becomes arbitrarily large, the individual will not buy life insurance to reach her bequest goal. Thus, as $h$ approaches infinity, the problem in this paper becomes equivalent to maximizing the probability of reaching the bequest goal when life insurance is not available in the market, which is solved in Bayraktar and Young (2015).
Purchasing Term Life Insurance to Reach a Bequest Goal: Time-Dependent Case
We consider the problem of how an individual can use term life insurance to maximize the probability of reaching a given bequest goal, an important problem in financial planning. We assume that the individual buys instantaneous term life insurance with a premium payable continuously. By contrast with Bayraktar et al. (2014), we allow the force of mortality to vary with time, which, as we show, greatly complicates the problem.
Stochastic Perron's method and verification without smoothness using viscosity comparison: obstacle problems and Dynkin games
We adapt the Stochastic Perron's method in Bayraktar and Sirbu (ArXiv: 1103.0538) to the case of double obstacle problems associated to Dynkin games. We construct, symmetrically, a viscosity sub-solution which dominates the upper value of the game and a viscosity super-solution lying below the lower value of the game. If the double obstacle problem satisfies the viscosity comparison property, then the game has a value which is equal to the unique and continuous viscosity solution. In addition, the optimal strategies of the two players are equal to the first hitting times of the two stopping regions, as expected. The (single) obstacle problem associated to optimal stopping can be viewed as a very particular case. This is the first instance of a non-linear problem where the Stochastic Perron's method can be applied successfully.
A numerical scheme for a mean field game in some queueing systems based on Markov chain approximation method
We use the Markov chain approximation method to construct approximations for the solution of the mean field game (MFG) with reflecting barriers studied in Bayraktar, Budhiraja, and Cohen (2017). The MFG is formulated in terms of a controlled reflected diffusion with a cost function that depends on the reflection terms in addition to the standard variables: state, control, and the mean field term. This MFG arises from the asymptotic analysis of an $N$-player game for single server queues with strategic servers. By showing that our scheme is an almost contraction, we establish the convergence of this numerical scheme over a small time interval.
Pluripotential Theory and Convex Bodies
In their seminal paper, Berman and Boucksom exploited ideas from complex geometry to analyze asymptotics of spaces of holomorphic sections of tensor powers of certain line bundles $L$ over compact, complex manifolds as the power grows. This yielded results on weighted polynomial spaces in weighted pluripotential theory in $\Bbb{C}^d$. Here, motivated from Bayraktar's recent paper, we work in the setting of weighted pluripotential theory arising from polynomials associated to a convex body in $(\Bbb{R}^+)^d$. These classes of polynomials need not occur as sections of tensor powers of a line bundle $L$ over a compact, complex manifold. We follow the approach in Berman and Boucksom's work to recover analogous results.
Optimal dividends in the dual model under transaction costs
We analyze the optimal dividend payment problem in the dual model under constant transaction costs. We show, for a general spectrally positive Lévy process, an optimal strategy is given by a $(c_1,c_2)$-policy that brings the surplus process down to $c_1$ whenever it reaches or exceeds $c_2$ for some $0 \leq c_1 < c_2$. The value function is succinctly expressed in terms of the scale function. A series of numerical examples are provided to confirm the analytical results and to demonstrate the convergence to the no-transaction cost case, which was recently solved by Bayraktar et al. (2013).
Non-parametric estimates for graphon mean-field particle systems
We consider the graphon mean-field system introduced in the work of Bayraktar, Chakraborty, and Wu. It is the large-population limit of a heterogeneously interacting diffusive particle system, where the interaction is of mean-field type with weights characterized by an underlying graphon function. Through observation of continuous-time trajectories within the particle system, we construct plug-in estimators of the particle density, the drift coefficient, and thus the graphon interaction weights of the mean-field system. Our estimators for the density and drift are direct results of kernel interpolation on the empirical data, and a deconvolution method leads to an estimator of the underlying graphon function. We show that, as the number of particles increases, the graphon estimator converges to the true graphon function pointwisely, and as a consequence, in the cut metric. Besides, we conduct a minimax analysis within a particular class of particle systems to justify the pointwise optimality of the density and drift estimators.
